Thinking (Sort of) In Russian

Dec 07, 2007 22:14

In an earlier entry, perhaps a month ago, I noted a Russian website that has scans of aviation history booklets. Well, I just spent two nights translating FOUR lines of captions on one picture. It didn't help that 1) it was in italics 2) for someone so used to working in the English version of the Roman alphabet, just ordinary non-italicized Cyrillic can be a bear. Italics make it much worse.

What's weird is that I wanted to learn Russian in High School, but there were no classes offered. I had no interest in German, French or Spanish at that time, which is all that the school offered.

At least this one skirmish is over, thanks to Character Map, a friendly font (Arial), AltaVista's BableFish and some experimentation on my part.

I live to fight another day.
