"It's just life"

'What is your personal life motto?' at QuizGalaxy.com

I'm wearing my Jolly Roger shirt tonight...that's the extent of my Halloween costume as I doubt anybody will come Trick-or-Treating.

Cartoons and revelations...

Saw the American Masters program on Charles Schultz and Peanuts the other night. That above meme reminds me of a strip the show quoted at the end. Charlie Brown, in bed, is going on about lying awake at night and wondering "Why Me?"--and he says he hears a voice that tells him "Nothing personal kid, but your number just came up."

It's evident from the program that Lucy was Schultz's first wife, and Marcie was his second. And that he put so much of his own life on the pages of Peanuts that he was his characters and his characters were him.

Also this week, I received the DVDs of the Captain Herlock series, and have been trying to set aside the time to watch them. I saw the Leiji Matsumoto interview on the bonus disk, and he said (kind of indirectly) that Harlock was his childhood imaginary friend. That Harlock changed as Leiji changed, and that Harlock was always ready to fight at Leiji's side.

I know you can't lump those two sides of the cartoon world together...but there have been times lately that I feel too close to the characters I try to write in my fiction. In fact, three of my latest attempts (Chillin' Out, Athena's Station and Hackett Continuum) have been insertion stories, where the main character is basically me. But is Camr me and Rayome my imaginary friend from childhood? I suppose I know, but I don't have evidence.
