what are the pros and cons of valentines day?
Valentines Day celebrated every year on Feb.14 is a holiday to basically show your appreciation and/or love for friends, family, and significant others. However, Valentines Day isn’t all “mushy gushy” it has its disadvantages as well. Shouldn’t Valentines Day be everyday? Currently it is just an over commercialized holiday milked to its limits for the profits it brings to retail stores and franchises across the country.
On Valentines Day a dozen roses cost you twice of what they would usually cost you. The only ideal thing to buy on this day is chocolate, cheaper than usual and if you wait till the day after forget it BARGAINS BARGAINS!! So there you go a pro of Valentines Day chocolate, cupcakes, and candy is relatively inexpensive the day after, kind of like the effect of Halloween. Disclaimer this effect does not apply to diamonds, clothes, flowers (because they won’t last a year) and other non edible items. On Valentines Day stores can sell anything that is pink, white, red and fuzzy and the masses will go crazy - which is pro for businesses everywhere.
However, Valentines Day is a killer of self-esteem. During this day suicide rates rise inexplicably because the poor singletons of the world are alone at home with a bucket of chocolate or bucket of ice cream, drowning in food till their hearts feel full. Emo kids are left at home alone slitting their wrists as they wait for Mr. Right, or Mrs. Right. Hopeless romantics hit an ultimate low when they realize they are hopeless on their search for love. While mean people with “valentines” run around shoving it in peoples’ faces that they are “loved” for at least this one day out of the year. So there is another pro people with valentines get a kick- an ego boost - out of parading their significant others.
Valentines Day like Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day is another hypocritical holiday. Society apparently only loves and shows appreciation for their dearest friends, and relatives on this particular day - so basically for the rest of the year where is the love? How great your significant other gave you flowers, chocolate, took you out to dinner, and told you how amazing you were on Valentines! Now for the rest of the year he/she can completely ignore you, right? Valentines Day puts ridiculous pressure on people to show their love for others so they strive to amaze and impress but what about the other 364 days of the year, no need to try at all.
Valentines Day a stressful and over commercialized holiday that appeals to the sheep in all of us. It helps businesses get rid of everything red, white, and pink. Also it helps them make mad money on chocolate, cupcakes and other cutesy food items. Valentines Day also helps those people with significant others to have a boost in self-esteem, while suicide rates rise, people’s dreams are crushed, and fatties everywhere are born. Valentines Day also allows people for the opportunity to show their love to others on only one day, while the rest of the 364 days who cares? Valentines Day is awesome, best day to go out and buy your little heart out only to be rejected, feed the economy please!
