I'm curious--why does whoever wrote the userinfo think that the voices ruin the game? I know people who will only play it with the voices, and while some are better than others, on the whole they tend to add humor. (There are also lines of dialogue which you'll only get from the voices.)
Also, you guys might appreciate this:

The Slylandro are the only known species to have evolved sentience on a gas giant. They themselves are bags of tissue filled with gas; they discovered communication as a means to organize themselves when herding food through the atmosphere. Slylandro are very curious about the rest of the galaxy, being unable to leave their own planet, and sent out a self-replicating exploratory probe to gather information and bring it back to their planet, Source.
Which Ur-Quan Masters Species Are You?
Gee, I bet no one saw that coming. Heh.
As for the user info thing about the voices, that'd be zarla's doing. She has a real hate for most of the voices, and I don't blame her in the least.
For me, the voices range from "passable" to "I want to punch this voice actor in the face so hard that their grandchildren will feel it". What that guy did to the poor Utwig was an atrocity beyond the expression of mere words. The Spathi's French accent was so fake and over-the-top that it was embarrassing just listening to them, and the weird emphasis on the wrong words didn't help. The Orz sounded like it was going to molest you as soon as your back was turned, which I think would really ruin the surprise of their creepy talk about the Androsynth and such to any newcomers to the game. It just doesn't have the same impact if you thought that they were creepy from the get-go.
For these and other reasons, I refuse to ever play the game with voices. I'd much rather just let my own imagination do the job for me. I think it'd be wise to recommend the same for newbies, since I know that if I had been presented with the voiced game first, I would've run away screaming and never given Star Control 2 a second chance. And not knowing the wonder of SC2 would be a sad thing indeed.
Of course, it's perfectly fine that you like the voices. Different strokes for different folks, yes?
