i'm an aesthete. i see art as an ends in and of itself - it exists to be pleasing to the senses, and is not a means to some higher good. my amateur photography (which is really me trying to capture the better-looking moments in my life) exists so that i can look at it and be pleased at capturing something nice looking. frankly, it annoys the crap out of me when people call photographs "interesting", "intriguing".. anything like that. i don't believe in it, because it all sounds ridiculously pretentious. i'm a whore for originality, because that is what pleases my senses. other people are into more banal things than i am, but it's all subjective.

bottom line - it's all how you look at it. don't let anyone else determine your way of life for you. don't surrender your passions. i'm passionate about having time to do what i want, so i'm going to end up in school until i'm 25 so that i can teach a couple of classes a week and spend the time i'm not grading papers on my own work. i don't know, i think we all have far more european ideals and that the american dream's protestant work ethic is killing all of our souls. but that's just my opinion.

i can't really decide how i view art , sometimes i feel that it shouldn't be looked into it too deeply and just be taken as it is, but other times i feel like the artist was trying to say something and can't help looking further into it. i like photography because i like being able to capture moments that otherwise would be fleeting, and i like forcing people look at things in a very specific way. i don't really consider what i do 'art' though, i think of it as more of a hobby.

at the moment i'm thinking i'll just keep taking classes, photography and others, and see if this is really what i want or if something else tickles my fancy. i really agree with the last thing you said, well put.

i have a confession to make: you use the word banal a lot, and i just finally looked it up. it's a good word.

off topic: sorry i never called you back last night, or whenever it was you called, i just opened my phone today and saw the message. do you guys want to go to the party? maybe i'll call you on the telephone and stop using livejournal as my only form of communication. you're at work now though.
