Zippy Update

Dec 08, 2008 08:06

I've heard from a few people that we'd forgotten who are friends if Zippy's. If you think of anyone else, please let them now, of course.

Zip0y did get moved to Stanford. Ang was out there most of Sunday and sent this last night around 8pm. We didn't get home until late, so I didn't get it out:

ang a bunch of folks have examined zipppy, the GI folks and nutritionist
ang were still left to see him
ang met with one of the ICU folks who basically gave us the lowdown
ang reviewed everything we knew so far, got a couple things corrected that
ang were either incomplete or wrong from the paperwork from the other
ang hospital
ang they xray'd his lungs and they looked "not too bad"
ang they want to get him off the ventilator as soon as they can, but want
ang to sort out what's going on inside him first
ang he's off sedatives, but since they pumped him up quite a bit yesterday,
ang it may take a day or two for it all to clear out of his system
ang white sell count is even higher... that's one of the big mysteries they
ang need to solve
ang they're going to do another CT scan tonight. they don't have the
ang images from the second CT scan, yet, and they need to see if the
ang pseudocyst has gotten bigger
ang they also don't know if it's really a pseudocyst. they may also take a
ang look at the fluid which is supposed to be fairly low risk
ang they're also going to look for an abscess which shold please Kam's dad
ang nephrologist says they're going to do intermittent dialysis until they
ang sort out what the real deal is with his kidneys. they want him to pee
ang on his own for a bit which makes sense
ang but he had to get dialysis tonight because he had high potassium
ang don't know how likely his kidneys are to recover, yet
ang the nephrologist is Jair Munoz Mendoza, there's someone named Lafayette
ang but I didn't catch what he did, the ICU guy we talked to was named
ang Justin
ang couldn't give us a chance of survival estimate because they just don't
ang know. they're not at the stage, yet, where they believe he's doomed,
ang but don't have enough information to fairly say what his chances are
ang the one thing that he could tell us is that across the board, 10% of
ang folks who get pancreatitis die from it
ang zippy has some stuff in his favor (young, no smoke, no drink) and some
ang stuff not in his favor (renal failure, on a ventilator)
ang he'll also have a dedicated nurse. a nurse at most has 2 patients and
ang only if they're in the same room.
ang if nothing else, what they were telling us matched what we expected
ang based on our research and Kam's dad's research so even though folks
ang know he could still die, at least there's confidence in the doctors.
ang and I am exhausted
ang I'm going to give albeg an update tomorrow and probably go over after
ang work depending on whether kam and the mom are still there
