Ola!

Ola amigos!

Our week-long trip to Mexico was a blast, we had the privilege of completing a cinder-block house for a woman with a baby girl and an older daughter and son. The first few days of the trip were spent landscaping, putting the roof on, and laying cement for the floors after pulling up the plants that had grown inside the house (it hadn't been worked on in 3 years!). And the last few days were spent completing the floors and decorating the house with handmade curtains, beds and blankets, and toys that we brought down with us.

I was fortunate to be able to spend a little time on each project, including digging a five foot hole for a banos (outhouse) which is much harder than it seems. In the evenings we were able to attend church, visit a drug rehabilitation center, and help with some childrens programs at a local mission.

It was amazing to see the hope that Elena (the mother) had, as she had been praying for her house to be completed for over 3 years. And to see the smiles on the faces of the children at the mission when we rolled in and made them balloon animals and played with them.

The trip made me realize again how easy it is for me to slip into
the comfort of living in Vancouver without considering how my life
might be lived in order to help others. And how amazing
God's love is, and that his love can truly change people as we
clearly saw at the rehab centre.

If anyone is interested in doing a similar project, there is an amazing non-religious organization called Absolute Hero Holidays that runs trips to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Thailand that I would recommend. Give it a try!
