otherwise here's the poem i wrote for my lit paper on antigone, this greek drama by sophocles. for those who don't know, antigone, the character, is the daughter of oedipus, the war mongrel that married his own mom. :b the poem's a retelling of sorts.

Antigone
(still subject to further revision)

So this is how
the story goes.

A dispute for a title
to sit on a chair

carved of the finest marble

ends with blood.
Lots of it.

Of the same kind. The red,
viscous liquid of life.

And so it was said, willed, even.
And respects were half-granted.

Fullness meant death of
the worst possible kind.

But she stood
and fell

at the same time.

She did not fear
tyranny or wrath.

So she chose, became--
the new Persephone.

Who would choose
a prince over a god?

The gods have their way
with things, they knew that.

She knew before everyone else.
That’s why she was buried alive.

Her prince, also, had a mind
and tried his hand at chivalry.

Power corrupts, it is known--
and deafens, too

so as you’d think.
The king? He didn’t, wouldn’t

listen, unless he was made terrified.
So he turned and looked

--by an old man who saw
nothing but darkness.

Alas, alas--

Tragedies are all the same.
Everyone usually dies.

And it was so.
Oh, glorious death.

Her marriage vows [woes] were said
and her nuptial band slipped

and tightened about her neck,
the end leading out

to a path to Hades.
Her prince, enraged

Lost his mind.
He charged and missed--

then followed her.
Stuck the blade in his side.

At the news of her son’s
undoing of his life,

the queen, distraught, mournful
(what mother wouldn’t be?)

wept and cursed and dealt

the final blow.
Yup, she killed herself too.

Abandoned, the king
Wishes himself away.

Nothing more than nothing,
Three deaths by their own

hands. It took this much
for judgement to unbend.

Too little, too late, all gone--
all for a matter of state.

So the story ends.

That’s how it’s told, this
story where wisdom

was watered by a rain
of blood and tears.

criticisms death threats and marriage proposals will be acknowledged and considered, but comments and any offers to finish my filipino paper will be much much much appreciated :) (nyak, asa pa!)
