Giles woke slowly, smiling softly when he felt her fingers resting against his chest. This was something of a new turn in their relationship. This type of touching. They touched, had touched for years previously. But that was normal touching - brushing against one another during training or patrol…playfully nudging one another now and then…a tender hug when it was needed. It wasn’t as if they hadn’t been touching one another in some way for the entire time that they’d known each other. But, this…the lazy, comfortable, simple rest of fingers against his skin in slumber…this was new.

His soft smile faded as his thoughts continued.

This was escalating more than he had expected. For him. He wasn’t sure what it meant for her. Their time together…in his bed, her bed…any surface he could possibly hold her against or lay her across…it was becoming complicated. Not complicated in the way of his youth - the ‘uh oh, feeling something…need to run and never look back’ type of complication. Not complicated in that manner at all.

The complication he was feeling this time was beautiful and warm and…

He exhaled softly as she snuggled closer to him.

Fucking complicated.

That only added to the newness of the turn he was experiencing. This was supposed to be simple. Sex and comfort when it was needed…and it had quickly become sex and comfort when it was wanted. And now? Now it was more than that. His desire for her enveloped him and he had found himself impatiently awaiting their next meeting.

And then the touching started. The gentle rest of fingers against him whenever they were close - sitting on the sofa, sitting at a table, standing in the kitchen waiting for the kettle to boil, walking by each other in the Council halls.

And it wasn’t just her touching him. He was as guilty as she. His fingers ached to touch her, tingled when they did. He’d always thought that to be the most cliché thing he’d ever heard - fingers tingling when they touched.

But, fuck, it was true. He tingled. He fucking tingled.

That tingle was leading him down a very perilous path. A path that showed her everything about him. A path that he was sure she had ventured down part-way, but now he wanted to take her hand and lead her down to the end. And what the fuck did that even mean in the grand scheme of them?

He wanted everything. He wanted to give her everything.

And not only was that complicated…it was terrifying.

“This is more than it was, isn’t it?”

He jumped slightly, startled at her warm voice. She chuckled sleepily and pressed a soft kiss to his chest.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you. But, you think so fucking loud sometimes.”

He snorted a soft laugh and placed a kiss in her hair. “My apologies.”

Buffy shifted again, tilting her head back to look at him. “It’s more, yeah?”

“Yeah.” He whispered after a beat, tenderly caressing her cheek with his fingertips. “I’m not really sure what to do with that knowledge.”

“Do we need to do anything with it right at this moment?”

“I don’t want to run, Buffy.” He whispered, cradling her cheek in his palm as he gazed into her eyes. “Do you understand what that means?”

“Shit just got complicated?”

He nodded slowly, glancing at her lips. “Extremely.”

“Can I tell you something?” She asked, reaching up to trace his chin with her index finger.

“Mm-hm.”

“It’s been complicated for me for a while now. But, I was too scared to say anything.”

“Scared?”

She arched an eyebrow at him, her fingers stilling their movement against his skin. “You just said you don’t want to run. What the hell do you think I was scared about?”

“Ah…” He murmured, leaning into her and brushing his lips across hers. “I think we should talk.”

“I think we are.” She countered.

He smiled in amusement and shook his head. “I think we should talk when we’re more dressed and possibly sitting on two separate pieces of furniture.”

She stared at him for a moment. “You’re going to end this, aren’t you?”

His smile faded into a look of pure confusion. “On the contrary, I was thinking of deepening this. Letting you in further…willingly. I…do you want this to end?”

She shook her head quickly, her eyes glistening with emotion. “No, no I don’t want this to end, Giles.”

He thought over the last few seconds of the conversation and realisation hit him. He gently glided his thumb along her cheekbone.

“If we continue this conversation here, we’re going to end up making love before we finish. If we’re sitting on the sofa together, we’re going to end up much the same way. I just…want to have the conversation.”

She slid her fingers over his Adam’s apple to rest at the base of his throat. “Do we really have to get dressed?”

His eyes closed as her fingers slid lower…along his sternum, down his ribcage, over his hip. He inhaled shakily as her fingertips traced indistinct shapes over his thigh, inching closer and closer to his now very erect cock.

“Buffy…” He whispered, allowing his own hand to take a very similar journey down her body.

When his hand reached her hip, his fingers tightened against her skin. He wasn’t sure if he had rolled onto his back or if she had pushed him onto his back. But, as she climbed on top of him, resting her knees either side of his hips, he knew that their conversation was going to have to wait a few minutes longer.

She leaned down and kissed him, slowly at first…intensifying as she slipped her tongue into his mouth…becoming frenzied as his hands gripped her hips and pulled her flush against him. They moved against one another, each knowing which slightest amount of pressure would affect the other and they timed it perfectly. They built each other quickly, swallowing one another’s moans as their tongues thrust against each other.

And then she suddenly tore her mouth from his, placed her hands on his chest, and pushed herself up. She stared into his darkened eyes, curling her fingers against his skin.

“You’re going to make me come.”

“I’m not far behind you, love.” He replied, guiding her hips so that her wet lips slid along the shaft of his erection.

“Do you want to be inside of me?”

He groaned thickly at the question, holding her hips still and glancing towards the bedside table. “Condom…”

She leaned over, quickly jerking the drawer open and pulling out a foil packet. He shifted impatiently underneath her, fingers twitching against her skin as he watched her rip the packet open.

“Buffy…”

She smiled at his heady tone, sliding the condom onto his cock. “I know…hurry.”

He licked his lips as she lifted her hips. He inhaled sharply as she guided him into her. And he held still as she took him fully within her - which was a terribly difficult thing to do, considering how her inner walls were quivering around him.

“I swear I think I could come just like this…” She muttered, closing her eyes.

“Not finding out today.” He mumbled, lifting her hips up slightly.

Her eyes opened and she looked down at him, understanding his desire…his need. Because it was actually the same as hers.

“Fuck me, Giles…” She whispered, covering his right hand with her left.

He rolled their bodies quickly, kneeling between her thighs as she curled her legs around his hips. He lowered his mouth to her neck, teeth gently nipping at her skin as he thrust into her. He nipped his way up to her earlobe, sucking gently before whispering thickly into her ear.

“This…will not take long.”

“Uh-uh…” She agreed, wrapping her arms around him…digging her nails into his back as she arched her hips up towards him in perfect rhythm.

“I want more.” He continued, breath hot against her skin. “I want so much more.”

“We can have everything, Giles.” She whispered back, moving her left hand to the back of his neck. “If you’re ready, we can have everything.”

His mouth latched onto the base of her neck, just behind her collarbone. The spot that he had found not long into their…quasi-relationship…that would make her lose control. Her hips bucked against him as he sucked harder against her flesh.

“Jesus, Giles…oh my fucking god…”

He continued thrusting into her, even as she screamed in ecstasy - her warm fluids gushing around him, wetting the bed underneath her. And as her nails raked across the nape of his neck, he shuddered…then moaned against her skin. His mouth released her as he thrust three more times as hard as he could before he groaned her name as he came.

He lowered his head, pressing soft kisses against the red bites he had left. And then he softly kissed her earlobe and closed his eyes.

“I’m certain I’m in love with you.” He whispered.

“Thank god…” She breathed, sliding her fingers through his hair to caress the back of his head. “Pretty sure I slipped down that road a couple of months ago.”

He lifted his head and looked at her curiously. She smiled, letting her hand move to the side of his neck.

“I’m in love with you too, Giles.” She whispered. “It stopped being about comfort or want or need when…”

He tilted his head slightly and brushed the hair back from her face with his fingers. “When?”

“When I woke up in your arms, my head on your chest. The sound of your heartbeat was so…perfect.”

“The fact that my heart beats equates to love?” He asked teasingly.

She rolled her eyes and gently nudged him off of her. He moved to her side and quickly removed the condom, neatly tying a knot in the end before dropping it into the wastebin under the bedside table.

“Seriously, though…” He continued, rolling onto his side and facing her. “Which night was that?”

“Vampire nest in Woolstone.” She replied, resting her fingers against his chest as she averted her eyes from his.

“Everything worked out that night, Buffy.” He stated softly, covering her hand with his.

She sniffled, shaking her head. “I almost lost you. Like…two seconds away from losing you.”

“Fortunately, you’re very fast.” He replied with a gentle smile. “That’s when this started…the touching.”

Buffy’s eyes snapped back to his and she tried to pull her hand away. He held it tighter against him, curling his fingers around her palm.

“I like it.” He whispered, glancing at her lips.

“I wanted to tell you.” She sighed, relaxing into the touch once more. “I think I did whisper it a couple of times while you were sleeping. But…”

“You were worried that I’d panic.” He finished for her, smiling as she nodded. “Understandable…and not entirely incorrect. In fact, I did panic when I realised that my emotions had…deepened.”

“But, you didn’t run from me.”

He shook his head. “I’d done that once before, I wasn’t going to do it again.”

“And then everything got complicated?”

He smirked and leaned into her, kissing her lips softly. “So very complicated.”

“You feel things pretty deeply, huh?”

“How do you mean?” He asked, curling his right arm under his head .

“You are like this well of emotion - but that well is surrounded by this huge, impenetrable wall and - ”

“Love, you have been chipping at that wall for years. It’s not nearly as impenetrable as you would think.” He smiled, lightly resting his left hand on her hip. “I learned very quickly how to hide my emotions from you. If I was going to survive, if you were going to survive…I needed to keep myself in check.”

“Huh?”

“I’m not talking about sexual attraction or desire. We bonded very quickly, terrifyingly so. Travers wasn’t wrong in some of the things he said, though it was never a father’s love I had for you. I would have given my life for you at any point - still would, truth be told. And that is dangerous in a Watcher/Slayer dynamic. It’s powerful and nearly unstoppable…but, dangerous. That’s why he removed me as your Watcher. It’s also why he didn’t attempt to force me to leave. Our bond was far too strong…it could have been disastrous if he tried to sever that bond.”

“Oh…” She said, obviously a bit confused.

“I couldn’t let you know that then. So I had to devise a way to…be there for you, without you knowing the true extent of what that meant.” He smiled nervously and exhaled a slow breath. “I should have known that I would have never been able to go into this without falling in love with you. But, I did think just that. That I could handle it. That I could give you what you needed without letting myself drown.”

“Giles…”

“I’ve been drowning for so long now, I don’t know what it feels like to not be.” He said, gently tapping his fingers against her hip. “And then the tingling started and…everything inside of me escalated and…I - ”

“Tingling? What do you mean?”

Giles snorted a laugh and shrugged a shoulder. “You know…like in those horribly written, cheesy romance novels… ‘his skin tingled at her touch’ nonsense. Only…it’s not nonsense. I fucking tingle when I touch you, I burn when you touch me. I ache when I’m not with you. And when we’re together, I feel like…”

“You’re home?” She finished hopefully, smiling when his eyes widened. “I feel the same, Giles. I feel so jittery and anxious when we’re apart. We come together and it calms. I touch you and I feel relief. I kiss you and I feel…” She licked her lips and paused for a moment.

“You feel…” He prodded on a whisper.

“Like I’m home. You’re my home, Giles. And when I’m away from you, I’m…homesick. You know?”

“Then don’t go away again.” He murmured.

“What?”

“Don’t go away. Stay here. Let’s see where this takes us. We’ve been on parallel paths…we’ve come to a juncture…there’s my path, yours, and…one that we can travel together. What do you say?”

“I’d say that you have the most confusing way to ask someone to live with you…that’s what I say.”

He grinned brightly. “Ah…but, you understood.”

“You’re a confusing, complicated man, Rupert Giles.” She moved closer to him, placing a warm kiss on his chin. “And I love you completely.”

“So, that’s a yes then?”

“Yeah.” She replied with a grin of her own. “And…I think we’ve had our discussion. And I was right - we didn’t need to get up or dressed to have it.”

“Mm…”

She laughed and kissed his lips before sitting up. “What do you want to do today? You know…our first day as a proper couple…”

His eyes darted to her breasts. “Stay in bed?”

She playfully smacked his shoulder, then pulled the sheet up…tucking it under her arms. She laughed again as he grumbled.

“Come on, Rupert. What do you want to do?”

He looked up into her eyes quickly and smiled. She understood the reasoning behind that smile and shrugged a shoulder.

“Figure I need to get used to that.”

“I love you.”

“I can get used to that too.” She said before leaning down and kissing him.

As he wrapped his arms around her, she decided that they could figure out what to do with the day later. It suddenly wasn’t all that complicated anymore.

Well, no more complicated than love is at any given time.
