This morning I woke up to the sounds of a cat who has caught something. I'm not sure if you know the sound...it's like a cross between a growl and frenzied purr, with a few chirps thrown in. I've heard Xanthe make the sound. I've heard Winchester make it.
This morning's was Allonsy's.
At first I thought it was a rat...but, I'm not so sure now. I can't figure out what it was, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a rat. I'm guessing it was about 17cm long, dark brown fur, short-nose, long tail (but not rat-like at all, it was smooth...) Allonsy wasn't all that much bigger than it...I mean, he's only 6 months old.
When I walked into the hall, both of the boys were there (Winchester was in the bedroom with us and Xanthe was in the kitchen). Weller was lying on the floor in front of their room...Allonsy was at the other end "playing" with something. I turned on the light and saw that it was a rather large animal and that Allonsy was lying on top of it.
I shooed him away and was pretty sure that it was dead. I picked it up by its tail and went into the kitchen to get a plastic bag. As I was getting ready to put it into the bag, it moved! So I started checking it over and it was breathing. Went and woke El up to see if she thought it was alive enough to rescue or if we should put it out of its misery.
Now, when I say that, I don't mean anything horrible. I wrap them up and put it in the freezer...they just go to sleep. I've only had to do this once...and that was with a baby bird that Winchester had brought in. It'd been kicked out of its nest (there were some issues with it) and Winchester brought it in. It was a heartbreaking thing to do, but I couldn't let it starve to death. :(
Anyway...we were looking it over (it was a male) and then I realized that the wet patches on the back of his neck and on his legs weren't bloody. There was no blood on him...just saliva from Allonsy. So, El put some paper towels in the rescued animal transporter (ice cream container with holes cut in the top...made specifically for Winchester's frogs) and I put him in. He took up the entire container.
Because Allonsy was watching me, I took the container with me into the bathroom when I had my shower.
By the time I was out and dressed, he was trying to move around in the container. So, I took him down to the creek and let him out in a dry spot under some trees. He climbed out of the container himself and walked quite quickly away. I hope he's going to be okay.
I do wonder what he was though.
I have no idea how he got in. The only thing I can think is that Winchester had brought him in and then came to bed. I really don't think that Allonsy would've been able to carry him at all, much less carry him through the cat flap in the window. That's a Winchester specialty.
And that was my morning.
Now to get lunches ready and get ready to be vaccinated!
