transportation review: Boltbus

The Greyhound/Peter Pan bus conglomerate has launched a new service called Boltbus. (See www.boltbus.com.) I rode it last week. Here's a brief review:

The buses are new and the ride is surprisingly cushy. Legroom was, as advertised, a bit better than your usual intercity bus. It had power outlets and wifi, as advertised, though the wifi crapped out in Connecticut somewhere. Service left on time and arrived close to on time; traffic getting out of Mass. had some extra suck.

The Boston terminus is in South Station; in NYC they do curbside dropoff in (depending on destination) one of a few different places; not sure how they settled on them, but there are a couple near Penn Station and one way downtown, maybe sorta-kinda trying to compete directly with the Chinatown buses. Weekday seats all seemed to be $15, $20 weekend, unless you book early and get one of the $1 seats, and generally $5 more if you buy walk-up instead of online. Load was very low; I assume the prices will go up once it gets more popular, but for now it's a nicer alternative to the Chinatown crowd.

Still not a train.
