Oh god, that article's gotten another fifty comments since I last looked. I'm pretty sure all of them are either "NAVIGATIONALSHIELDINGNAVIGATIONALSHIELDING" or some kind of flamewar about other commenters' poor understanding of Hollywood physics.
Urgh, that whole article bothered me. I know journalism worships "hooks", but suggesting that we've never seen aliens because they blithely hopped into untested warp ships and killed themselves is kind of intelligence-insulting, terrestrial or otherwise.
You expect journalists, who in 9.99 out of every 10 articles they write about "science" manage to get the information wrong, to not look at space travel outside an extremely narrow hominid scope? Why, next you'll be telling me the Earth isn't less than 10,000 years old and wasn't created by God in 6 literal days!
