I've been watching films while writing my werewolf bigbang. So, here are some goodies!
Lake Mungo is one of those faux documentaries that worked for me because I didn't recognize any of the actors. The story is very simple one of immeasurable loss. The Palmer family loses their daughter through a freak drowning accident. The film unfolds as the grieving family members and friends discuss about Alice's death and their relationship with her.
It is mesmerizing in that as the film moves forward, the people realize how little they knew of Alice and the troubles she had. And on top of this, there are freaky things happening in the Palmer's house which convinces them that Alice is haunting them.
That's all I can say, but the revelation scared the hell out of me. The movie can do with a bit of tighter editing, but that's me nitpicking.
Black Death stars in Sean Bean who has carved out a nice little niche either in morally-ambiguous knight in a medieval costume drama or as a heavy in a gang film. In this one he has armor, shield, and a very tarnished sense of right and wrong. Novice Osmund (played by Redmayne from The Pillars of the Earth) has sent away his lady love from their town because of the Plague. She promises she'll wait for him at a certain spot for one week if he wants to abandon the Church and join her. The very next day Ulric (Sean Bean) and a group of men arrive in the monastery, demanding a guide for their journey. Osmund realizes the area they're talking about is but a stone's throw from the spot his lover had told him earlier. Deciding this was Divine Intervention, he agrees to be their guide.
Then, shit breaks lose. Osmund finds out that the knights are looking for this particular village because the no one is this town has been touched by the Plague. In fact, all reports indicate they are doing just dandy while the entire world around them is going to hell on the 6:35AM express. The Church figures devilry is at work and sends their 'hit squad' to deal with the heretics.
The movie is bleak, filmed in a washed-out grey color, and very very violent. But the plot is interesting. Christianity vs. Paganism, power vs. faith, and right vs. wrong. Just so you know, nobody's a good guy here no matter what their motives are or what they believe. The ending is brutal though the way the plot unfolded, also inevitable.
