Ok, need to go back and read this in depth, only gave it a skim for now because... well... I was reading all fucking about this yesterday. Weird timing, man...
Anyway, Have you read that AdBusters piece about how Hipsters are (allegedly) the dead end of Western Civ? I feel like the article came from a good place but I also feel like it was also complete and utter shit. Read it if you haven't: http://www.adbusters.org/magazine/79/hipster.html
I don't fully agree with any of these pieces though I feel like they all hint at very true ideas. I'll probably lay a more in depth comment on you after lunch when I've digested what you've written (and a sandwich, better thinking always gets done on top of a fine sandwich).
nah, we just read similar sources? atleast in terms of ls. the adbusters piece is like that douchebag who said, upon the fall of communism, that it was "the end of history" and that from now on there would be universal peace and capitalism. hipsters will be succeeded by something worst and even more vapid eventually, and then people will reminisce and make something romantic out of hipsterism. i can just see the ken burns documentary about it now...
i realized at the end of the essay that i had actually done something really popular - indeed, it almost seems in vogue to hate hipsters, given this is the natural non-counterrevolution to their non-revolution, but the point is that i don't hate them, i just think it's a silly "movement" given it's essentially contradictory - all about individualism, in theory, but absolute conformity in reality. again, they are pretty harmless, as social groups go. i mean, really, thank god the wearing-skinny-jeans-and-publicly-ejaculating-on-unsuspecting-pedestrians movement (the jizzsters) never caught on.

I also read two pretty great reactions to that piece, One by the founder of Vice: http://streetbonersandtvcarnage.com/blog/hating-hipsters/
and a better one by former Vice writer Momus (dunno if that's his real name or what): http://imomus.livejournal.com/390994.html

Oh and, some Laughing Squid solicited crowdsourced definitions of what a hipster may or may not be: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=laughingsquid%2Bhipster
