17. "Be the flame - not the moth." | Casanova

”You have to be the flame, Gabriel, not the moth,” Ben explained, waving his arms around as the two men stood in his bedroom, getting ready for their night out on the town. Gabriel hadn’t wanted to go, not really, he never did, but Ben had insisted, so there he was. He stared at him though after those words came out of his mouth, a look somewhere between disbelief and utter confusion on his face.

“What does that even mean?” he asked, furrowing his brows just a bit in thought as he tried to work it out for himself, though it didn’t make sense, to him at least.

“You know the saying. Like moths to a flame. You have to be the flame Gabriel. Be the flame. Have the ladies come to you, instead of you going to them. If one comes to you, more will follow suit,” he replied with a wise nod, almost as though he had just given the most valuable information there was in the world. Gabriel couldn’t help but roll his eyes at that, more so over the look that he was giving him than the advice, though.

“I’ve never been a flame in my entire life, Ben, I don’t think I’m going to burst into one now,” he muttered, a bit dryly too as he turned back to the mirror and started to fuss with his hair again. Ben had insisted on spiking it and it was driving him crazy. Every time he would smooth it down though the other would attack him trying to re-spike it, so he had given up on trying to get it flat again, but that didn’t stop him from poking at it.

“Oh, I’m pretty sure I could make you flaming,” Ben said to that, the words followed by a snigger and Gabriel rolled his eyes again, shaking his head. Sometimes the other could have such a childish sense of humor, and he had to drop his gaze to the floor, mainly to hide the fact that he was smiling too. “Besides, you’re the flame to my moth, so that should give you some confidence. After all, I am the most awesome moth in the world. That means you’re the most awesome flame in the world.”

“Sometimes I wonder what exactly goes on in your head,” Gabriel said with a laugh, a slight grin on his face as he turned to look at him, one brow quirked just a bit. “Did your Mom drop you when you were a baby or something?”

“Mhm, she totally did,” Ben nodded as he disappeared into the bathroom for a brief moment, presumably to spritz on a bit of cologne even if he had once already. He’d tried to explain his system to Gabriel, about layering it and all, but he had given up trying to understand any part of Ben’s routine that he had for before they went out. He stared after him for a moment with his jaw agape after he said that he had, because he hadn’t expected that.

“She did? Really?” he asked, reaching up to scratch the back of his head, his brow furrowed again as he worried, hoping that he hadn’t caused any offense with what he had said or the way he said it, however, Ben poked his head out of the bathroom and beamed at him, so chances that he was offended were slim to none.

“Yeah, she totally did. It was straight into a vat of awesome juice,” he said brightly, wiggling his eyebrows before ducking back into the bathroom. Gabriel just stared again and then brought a hand up to smack his palm against his forehead before laughter bubbled up in him.

“You’re such a dork sometimes,” Gabriel told him, amusement dancing in his eyes as Ben came out from the bathroom, going to him and hooking an arm in his as he lead him out of the bedroom, just to make sure that he didn’t try to run away.

“Rubber-glue, rubber-glue, off of me and on to you,” he said, squeezing his arm as they headed out of the apartment. “I’m going to make you into a flame, and the kind that attracts the ladies if it’s the last thing I do. It’s my…it’s my life’s mission.”

“Your life’s mission is to make me into a ladies flame?” he asked, pulling away from him and shaking his head. He wasn’t going to run away or anything, and if they stayed together like that, he was going to come off as the type of flame that Ben had chuckled about earlier.

“Yes, yes it is. You keep nagging at me that I need to get a job, so this is going to be my job. Making you awesome. OH OH OH! Making you popular!” Ben exclaimed, excitement exploding from him as he started to skip down the street, stopping to grab a light post and then twirl around it before finally beaming at him; and bursting into ‘Popular’ from Wicked.

Gabriel burst out laughing at that, so much so that he had to grab onto the nearest light post for support as he watched, shaking his head quite a bit at him when he finally managed to control the laughter. He walked towards him and gave him another shove before sighing heavily, as though he was such a heavy burden for him.

“Alright, we can definitely not go to this bar for a week or two,” he said, gesturing at the bar where people who were smoking outside were staying at them. He grinned a bit at that and nodded, stepping out into the road to hail a cab.

“That’s just fine, Gabriel, as long as we make you a flame, I don’t care where we have to go or how long it takes. Like I said, I’ve made it my life’s goal, and I’m going to complete it, mark my words.”
