He was fine just the way he was. That was what he had said. What Peter had said. Both Peters, but it seemed that it was only the scarred Peter that meant it.
Gabriel wasn’t sure why the scarred Peter had said it, either. He had been against the relationship from the start, so he would have thought that he would be pleased to know that it had been shattered, but it seemed to be quite the opposite. He seemed to be mad at his other self for doing what he had done, for saying what he had said. Perhaps it was that he was scared that his other self had ruined his one chance at salvation, his chance at being happy. That he had just made it so that he too would become like him, bitter and alone. It was understandable, but not surprising. It had surprised him however that Sylar, his other self, had told him that he didn’t want to become him.
The problem was that now he didn’t know who, or what he wanted to become. His world had been turned upside down in the blink of an eye after he had met Emile Danko. He was taken care of now though, and life was starting to get back to semi normal, but now he didn’t know what to do with himself. When he was with Peter, going back and opening up his watch shop again hadn’t seemed like the worst idea in the world. It was going to be nice, in fact. Peter had gotten a job as a paramedic again, and he was going to go back to his job. They already had a house together that they shared, but maybe they’d get an apartment in the city too. Like rich people have, an apartment for the week when they work, and then a house more out in the country side for the weekends and vacations.
And then, lastly, they had spoken about their plans for the future. Gabriel had admitted to him that he some day wanted children. Of course, that was a long time in the future, but it wasn’t something that he had been embarrassed about talking about, and that showed just how comfortable he was around him.
They were together and in love, and they were going to save each other. Peter was going to save him from becoming Sylar, and in turn, he was going to save him from becoming his scarred future self. They were supposed to be each others salvation.
But now his world had been turned upside down again, or right side up, depending on how you looked at it. He was back on the path that almost certainly was going to lead to him becoming Sylar, and there was little that could stop him. If his other self didn’t want to help him, then he didn’t have to. The tick called to him loud enough that he could make the transition on his own.
The only thing that was stopping him now was the scarred Peter. The scarred Peter that said that he was okay just the way he was. The scarred Peter that said that he was good enough just the way he was. The scarred Peter that said that he liked him, just the way he was.
The scarred Peter that was quickly becoming his last and final chance at salvation.
