”Could I see those?” he asks, while casting a nervous glance over his shoulder. The shopkeeper smiles knowingly at that, as though all that came to view the items he wants to see act the same way. He doesn’t say a word about it as he pulls out the items, and carefully sets them onto the counter.

“I’ll give you a few minutes alone. Most like to view them that way, to see if they form a connection.”

The shopkeeper bows his head before moving to the front of the shop, busying himself with cleaning the glass of the display windows in the meantime. Gabriel appreciates it, he truly does, and he inhales deeply before looking down at the items in front of him.

A pair of rings, twin gold bands, lie in front of him, and there’s little in the world, or universe for that matter, that makes his heart ache more than they do. He knows that it’s his own fault for coming in to look at them, but there’s a need to it, for him, though it’s a need that he could never explain. He knows perfectly well that he’s never going to be able to marry his soul mate, no matter how much he longs for it.

‘There’s no need,’ Leonard had said the one time he had asked about it, his eyes shining with hope. Of course he’d known that the others divorce had been bitter, but he’d hoped that he could change his mind about it, and make him feel as though giving marriage another shot would be worth it. He knows perfectly well that it’s not a necessity for them to get married so show their love, but he still thinks it would be nice.

He picks up one of the rings and smiles to himself, because he can see it all so clearly in his head, for better and for worse.

It would be in Georgia, because he knew that that would be what Leonard would want, whether he said it out loud or not, and he was willing to do just about anything for him. It would be in the summer, too, and probably in the evening. That way it would still be warm, but they couldn’t have to deal with the heat from the midday sun. The sounds from nature too, the crickets and lightning bugs would hold a certain mood too, going along with the soft tones of the jazz band playing in the background.

Joanna would be the flower girl, that was a natural choice, and though he can’t even see his own best man, the image of Jim standing next to Leonard is perfectly clear in his head. He’d be grinning, the sort of big, dumb, Jim Kirk smirk that everyone knew and loved. Other than that though, the rest of the guests were a blur to him, though he’s sure that should the day ever come, they would even be a blur to him then.

He’s not sure what they’d dance their first dance to, but in some ways he’s glad for that. To him it means that it’s something they’d find together, something that would mean something to both of them, and would be their song, and he doesn’t want to decide that on his own.

He does however know that it would be beautiful. It would be the wedding everyone longs for theirs to be, simply because he would be marrying the man he loved.

The tinkling of the door opening pulls him from his daydream; and a look of panic washes over his when he sees Leonard coming towards him. The shopkeeper seems to know, though, and understand, for in a flash he’s there, and the rings are not. In their place there are several pairs of cufflinks instead.

“Cufflinks?” Leonard asks, giving him a questioning look. Gabriel simply smiles and nods, turning to press a quick kiss to his cheek.

“I want to get you a new pair for dinner tonight,” he says, and then juts his bottom lip out a bit into a slight pout. “I was going to surprise you, but you’ve ruined that now.”

“Oh.”

He can see the other is mentally kicking himself, and quickly shakes his head - this time pressing a quick kiss to his lips.

“It’s fine. Now you can pick out the ones you like the best.”

They leave the shop together, and though what is in the bag isn’t what Gabriel would like, Leonard likes it, and that’s the most important thing to him.
