"Deprived of meaningful work, men and women lose their reason for existence; they go stark, raving mad." - Fyodor Dostoevsky

”Gabriel Gray? It is such an honour to finally meet you.”

Gabriel turned around sharply, caught off guard; first by the words and then by the appearance of the man who had spoken to him.

“Uhm, yes, that’s me, but…do I know you?” he asked, and a quick thought ran through his head: And most importantly, why is it an honour to meet me?

“Oh; no no - you haven’t. But I’ve seen you around,” he replied, and though Gabriel waited with a questioning look, the other didn’t seem to have anything further to add onto that, except: “And I know everything about what you can do.”

Gabriel froze - paralyzed on the spot as the stranger started to move around him. Panic was rushing through him, because the last time a stranger had told him that he knew what he could do; he’d been locked up in a cell and drugged. Still though, he didn’t know how to react, because everything in him seemed to have come to a full halt.

“Do not fear, brother, for I am not here to hurt you,” the man told him as he moved to stand in front of him again and nod. “I’m here to help you. Or rather, I am here to ask you for your assistance.”

“My assistance?” Gabriel asked, looking at him with a look of utmost confusion on his face. “On what? And…why me? What can I do to help?”

“You don’t even realize your full potential, do you Gabriel? There is so much you can do. You’re one of the most special people out there, after all,” he replied, a boy smirk slowly spreading across his face. “You can do something that no one else can.”

“Oh,” Gabriel replied, and then mentally kicked himself because he knew that he sounded like an idiot. The stranger seemed to be patient though and just kept his gaze on him as Gabriel straightened out his thoughts. “What is it that you want me to do?”

A pleased sort of smile appeared on the other man’s face at that as he looked him over again, and then hummed with approval.

“Blind faith for a man whose name you don’t even know… That is a trait that can be both good and bad, Gabriel Gray,” he said, and Gabriel quirked a brow just a bit. He hadn’t even realized that he didn’t have the other’s name, after all. “It’s Samuel.”

“Samuel? Oh, I see…” Gabriel started, but was distracted as the other pulled a piece of paper out from his pocked and handed it to him.

“There’s strength in numbers, Gabriel, and we must stand together against anyone who might try to bring us down,” Samuel calmly explained, but those words went right through Gabriel’s mind as he was staring at the piece of paper.

In his hand he had a list. A list of names, and on some addresses; but that wasn’t what made the list interesting. What did make the list interesting was that there was a column which listed the ability that each and every person on the list had. Immediately it felt as though his skin was crawling, and he wanted nothing more than to disappear from where he was and to where these people were; but for some reason he didn’t.

“Who are they?” Gabriel asked after a long moment had passed, but Samuel hadn’t even moved an inch. “And you still haven’t told me what it is you want me for…”

“They’re lost, Gabriel. Lost brothers and sisters who need help finding their family,” Samuel told him, keeping his eyes on his face. “What I need from you is for you to help me help them find their way b back home. Will you help me with that, Gabriel?”

“Yes, of course I will,” Gabriel replied almost immediately, not even letting a full second pass before the words were all tumbling from his mouth. Samuel just smiled at it, and nodded, and a grin slowly spread across Gabriel’s face.

“Perfect,” Samuel replied, and looked pleased with himself at that. “So do you have any more questions, brother? Send them here, and they will have somewhere they belong.”

“No, I don’t think I do,” Gabriel replied as he took the card, though a light bulb went over his hand and made him flail his arms ever so slightly. “Wait! What…what do I do if they don’t want to go?”

“Then I am quite sure that you will manage to find a way to convince them to reconsider the offer, my brother,” Samuel told him, and before Gabriel could even open his mouth to say something in return he was gone - lost in the crowd and leaving him with the list and the card that upon looking at it properly turned out to be for a circus.

He reread the list several times after that before tucking it away amongst papers where unless searched for wouldn’t be found, because he needed a day or two to think about it all. To work out his plan, really.

Peter was doing his thing to make the world a better place - he saw this as his chance to do the same.
