“The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we hit it.” --Michelangelo Buonarroti
“Are you sure you want to do this, Gabriel? You know you don’t have to if you don’t really want to. You can just…stay here. With us. All of us. We’ll teach you things, everything you need to know. You don’t have to go off,” Len told him as he started to fuss with his shirt, and then the collar of it. Gabriel just smiled at that though and reached up to take his hands; pulling them down and giving them a loving squeeze.
“I know that, Len, and I appreciate it, but I really want to do this,” he assured him in a soft voice, and then pulled him close to give him a gentle, loving kiss. “I…I think that this is my second chance, though, you know? To go to school, or well, college of sorts, since I didn’t get the chance to go when I was younger. And now…now I have the chance to go to a school that I could never even have imagined in my wildest dreams. I want it. I really do.”
He smiled encouragingly at the other, but Len just rolled his eyes slightly, muttering about how he believed too strongly in fate for his own good, and that it would sooner or later end up getting him killed. He knew that is was loving though and just pulled the other close for a hug, though that just lead to more grumbling.
Gabriel had been hesitant from the start about enlisting, but even more about having to tell Leonard about it. He’d talked to others about it, at first when it was just a thought in his head. He’d even brought it up with both Jim and Spock, and after getting opinions from those he’d grown close to, he found that it might be for the best if he did join, even if it was just for a bit. It would certainly make it easier for him to be on the ship. He could be a proper crew member, if he was lucky, rather than just a passenger.
Even after working out that he wanted to enlist, and after taking his tests and explaining the unique situation that he found himself in he still hadn’t told him, and for weeks it was a nagging pit in his stomach that just got worse whenever the other was close. He had even been given a special field to study: Earth History. It made sense to everyone, even him, both because he was much closer to parts of history, and he had a lot of catching up to do.
Naturally the problem was that they would be apart. Had Leonard really just been an old country doctor as he often heard him muttering, there wouldn’t have been a problem. They would be living together, and they’d see each other nightly, but of course, that wasn’t the case with them. Leonard would have to stay on the ship, and they would be apart for the year his course lasted. But still, the reason he had come with him to the future was so that they could be together, so naturally him leaving seemed counterproductive. Eventually, of course, he had had to tell him, and in turn it had earned him a smack upside the head and mutterings where all he could make out was ‘boy’.
“I need to do this, Len,” he started off softly, and then pulled him in for another tight hug, burying his face against his neck. “For us; really. I’m out of place here. Out of my time, and this will help me get used to it all. To be integrated into the society. And then…then I can be with you. Always. Besides, it’s only one year, and we’ll see each other during the holidays. You’ll blink and it’ll have all gone by, and I’ll be back to bother you all day, every day.”
Gabriel gave the other’s hand another reassuring squeeze as he smiled, and for a moment he thought he saw a glint of sadness in Len’s eyes, but it was gone in an instant, only to be replaced by glaring.
“You know you could have probably had everything sent to you, right? Like that…internet schooling thing you were telling me about. That way you wouldn’t have to leave me,” Len grumbled in reply, and the last added word made Gabriel’s heart ache, because he didn’t want the other to feel that way - like he was leaving him. Before he could say anything about it though he felt his arms wrap possessively around him, and he allowed himself to just smile softly, inhaling deeply to get the other’s scent.
“I know that, Len, but I need to get out and get to know other people than just the crew. And I want to see what it’s like. Earth, I mean. I want to experience everything I can while I’m still young…ish,” he explained and smirked a bit at the last words, though that just earned him another pointed look, and another when he snickered. Of course he’d told the other his reasons for wanting to enlist several times before, but he seemed to always conveniently forget them, so he’d have to explain again. “Besides, Len, as they say: absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
He trailed off slightly as he felt Len’s grip tighten on him, and he sighed softly; just tightening the grasp he had on him as well.
“I’m going to be alright, Len,” he murmured softly into the other’s ear, though he was rather certain that it wasn’t his health that was making him worry so much, or even that he was going to have difficulty in school or at making friends. He knew well that Len had a slight jealous/possessive personality, and that was something that had attracted him even more to him. But that also made an already difficult situation worse, because he didn’t know fully how to assure him. “And you know perfectly well that I love you.”
He pulled back at that, wanting to look him in the eye as he spoke; but first he leaned in to press a hard kiss to his lips.
“I love you, Len. I love you with all my heart. I gave up my home, and my time for you so you don’t have to worry about me running off with some harlot in a skirt just because we’re apart for a short, but still extended period of time,” he told him firmly, and brought a hand up to cup his face, stroking his cheek with his thumb. “I. Love. You.”
“You…” Len started, but stopped before Gabriel could have any indication as to what it was he was going to say. Instead he leaned in to kiss him again, hard and demanding; and owning in a way. “You better contact me every day so that I know how you are, boy.”
Gabriel opened his mouth to say something to that, but before he could utter a single word he felt his lover’s teeth sinking into his neck, and then a moan was all he could form.
He didn’t mind being marked by him; he had been before and it seemed only fair. He was leaving, after all, and this way people would know that he was taken from the start.
“You’re going to make me late for my ship transfer, you know,” Gabriel told him in a soft voice, the words just barely murmured as he managed to gather him through the thick haze that had clouded his mind. He groaned softly as he felt the other’s hand moving up under his shirt and he arched closer to him, wanting to feel as much of him as he could before having to go.
“We saved the whole damn planet from crazy Romulans,” Leonard replied gruffly as he pulled his hand out from under his shirt, only to take Gabriel’s hand to start to drag him off towards his quarters. “They can wait for me to give my boyfriend a proper farewell.”
