Yesterday, I woke up bright and early and went down to the leasing office with my current college roommate to put down our deposit for our first apartment. It is incredibly exciting. Laura, my room mate, and I have known eachother since we were 14. We met at summer camp of all things and found out our freshman year of college that we were going to the same university. It was a great coincidence and we've been roommates ever since. I've wanted to move out of the dorms residence hall since the end of my freshman year but due to financial reasons couldn't find a way to do it until now. We will be living within walking distance to campus in a small little apartment. At first when I took my mother to go see the apartment she was totally against it. The kitchen cabinets were too "cheap" and the appliances weren't "new." At this time I still thought I might need her help to co-sign my lease for me so her approval and support was not only wanted it was needed. I was slowly able to wear her down for the same reasons that Laura and I choose the place. It's convient, within walking distance to campus (I don't drive), it is secure, cheap clean laundry falicities with large economy sized washer and dryers, pets are allowed, and they could hold the apartment for us until August. The "cheap" looking cabinets were the least of my worries. I wasn't expecting much for 500 dollars a month and when we saw the place, with its hardwood floors, and big bedrooms we fell in love. Oh and not to mention free internet. That's a huge plus for a couple of poor college students.
Now all I have to worry about is one last final and my third semester of college will be complete, then I will get to go off to field school for a few weeks, and then I have the wonderful opportunity of trying to find a summer job. I will, for once, keep my hopes up.
