Xiaoyu stared at the city lights from her balcony. She felt chills as a slight gust blew around her. It wasn’t quite summer yet - spring is still trying to hold on, making her draw her sweater closer. In her hand was her phone, which she clutched so tightly her knuckles were turning white. It was getting late and she felt a yawn creeping up her throat. Despite her long day and an even longer night, she is not going to sleep. Not yet.
She felt the vibration before she heard the ringtone. The personalized tune told her that this was the phone call she's been waiting for.
"I'm sorry," she heard before she could say hello.
"Hm?" She smiled.
"I'm sorry I haven't been calling lately," said Joonmyun, voice soft. He was probably trying to stay quiet to keep his groupmates from waking.
"That's okay. I know why."
"I miss you." She heard the ache, the stress and the hidden message. I miss you. I want I could see you. I want to hold you.
"Me too." When can I see you? I'll be patient. I'll wait for you.
"So... Do you know what day it is?" He sounded like a little child, trying to sound nonchalant but excitement evident in his voice.
"Happy Birthday, Joonmyun," she laughed.
"There's that, yes, but there's something else."
"Um..." She furrowed her brow.
"You really don't remember?" He sounded disappointed.
"Give me a second..." He waited some more.
"Happy anniversary!" Joonmyun burst out, unable to wait any longer.
Xiaoyu laughed again. Leave it to Joonmyun to remember their anniversary right when EXO was preparing for their comeback.
"Happy anniversary," she replied. "I love you."
"I love you more," he replied playfully.
"I love you most," she retorted. "I win."
"Yes, you win," he chuckled. "My dad was right. Women always win."
"Hey!"
"Easy, easy."
She hummed in response. The two settled into an easy silence, content with listening to the other breathe. The city lights twinkled merrily. It has been so long since she had heard his voice. It had been hard on them both, keeping this up with their relationship in two different countries. they both knew they were getting busier, and it will only get harder from here. Even thinking about being so far away from him, despite all the messages and calls, made her tears well up. The lights blurred. She wiped her tears and tried to sniffle discreetly, hoping he wouldn't hear.
"Xiaoyu?"
"Hm?"
"Are you okay?"
"Yes," she answered, voice think.
"You can tell me, you know."
"I just miss you," her tears started to fall again. She wiped them away. "I miss you so much."
"I know. I think about you everyday."
"We can do this, right? We can make this work?" Her voice grew small. He heard her vulnerability and felt his heart break.
"Yes," he replied firmly. "Yes. We can do this. We will do this. I want to be with you and nothing can stop me."
"Joonmyun..." Her tears were falling freely. The night grew cold, and she retreated into the warmth of her apartment. She curled herself into a blanket on her couch.
"Stop crying, silly. My girlfriend is not supposed to cry."
"I'm not," she sniffled. "I'm... Just cold."
"Be happy. For me, okay?" She nodded and bit her lip.
"Take care of yourself until I get there. I need the love of my life happy and healthy when I sweep her off her feet."
She giggled at his words. Cheesy word never failed to make her laugh. Joonmyun smiled at the sound.
"That's better." She hummed again.
"I promise you I will be there soon."
She imagined him nodding to himself, face serious and set. She loved him for trying so hard for her, and she promised to try just as hard for him.
"Joonmyun, you should sleep soon."
"I will soon. Just wait."
"Wait for what?"
"Almost... Almost... Okay!"
"What are you talking about?"
"Its midnight. Happy birthday, Xiaoyu."
"We're both 22, finally."
"And we're going to spend next year and every year after that together," he said. Xiaoyu imagined his face set and earnest, nodding to emphasize his point.
"Mmm..." Xiaoyu started to doze off. "Joonmyun."
"Hm?" He was listening to her steady breathing, matching his own breath with hers.
"Can you stay on the phone with me until I sleep?"
"Of course."
Xiaoyu yawned and curled closer into a ball. She doesn't know when she will next see him, or if their relationship will make it through the trials of time. But at that moment, she was content with imagining him next to her, listening to his breathing and soft sighs over the phone.
"Good night, Joonmyun." In his mind's eye, he was next to her right now, holding her hand while she descended to sleep. He would kiss her foreheard, her ear, her nose and gently touch lip to lip. Finally, he would pull her into him, and let her rest her head on his shoulder.
"Good night, Xiaoyu."
