Father Doesn't Always Know Best

I remember when I was sent topside, it was just another order in just another day.

Dad called me to his office and explained that he wanted me to help with his expansion of Hell, the circles were getting crowded again so it was time to expand outward once more. Of course when any form of construction goes on you need workers to break ground and move the walls and that's what I was to send back to Hell, more strong backs and weak minds to swing hammers and wield shovels. It was a small side note that he had a list of specific people he wanted me to send his way, since I was going to be up there anyway. The expansion wasn't anything new, why do you think so many wars have been started? What better way is there to get a whole bunch of new souls into the afterlife? We also have a hand or two in natural disasters but those are generally considered Acts of He Whom We Don't Mention. Hey, I'm just Lucifer's daughter, not the one that makes the rules.

Mom sent me a quiet message to join her for dinner and we discussed a bit the orders that Dad had given me. She was concerned when I mentioned the list. Telling her some of the names didn't ease that concern much either. She started telling me how she'd have to look into a few things but she'd get back to me. She was really unhappy about the whole deal about locking down my powers. How's a girl supposed to survive in a gun filled world with no protection? We both kind of assumed I'd be able to have something to protect me. Turns out all I was going to be given was that list and an express ride to the top.

The next day when I met Charon at the River Styx I knew he was just following his own orders so I didn't fight any of it, I paid the man my two coins and had my ride to the other side. We made small talk, I'd known the damned denizens of old story tales all of my life and we had a bit of a catch up. I didn't understand the look of sadness as we docked. I thought it might have been directed more toward the pressing mass of dead trying to bribe their way across in lieu of proper payment. I was completely confused when he apologized to me.

Things were rather clearer when as my foot touched down on the bank of the river and he called my name. I turned and he splashed some water in my face. I even managed to swallow some of it. Well, right then things weren't much clearer, as a matter of fact they were getting quite a bit fuzzier. I was having trouble remembering how I'd gotten topside, or Mom telling me that she'd be in touch with me, or even much more than the list of names Dad had asked me to collect for him, since I was already up here. It took a bit of reading before I realized that I'd been splashed with Lethe water. I couldn't hold it against Charon, he was just doing as he'd been told. There were no long term residents of any note that didn't do as told from On Low.

With my obvious powers, limited as they were, I was taken in by the Hero Corps. They took care of my basic retraining in how to use my powers. They provided me with the phone, with a small apartment, even with a bit of money. Of course all that meant that I had more orders to follow. After talking with mom when she visited me one night I realized that my job was going to be much harder than I realized. I had to follow Dad's orders while also completely ignoring them and forwarding the good in the world. Not easy and damned dangerous, so to speak.

At least Dad wouldn't necessarily know that I'd be given choices by Hero Corps on which of a small selection of orders I would take. Time and time again I took ones that would only minimally meet his needs. I always reported back to him that I was only doing as ordered, keeping a low profile by doing as Hero Corps asked me to, which since he was the one expecting me to keep a low profile, there wasn't much he could say about that.

Of course as I got stronger and regained my powers it wasn't quite so easy to keep fudging the information. Eventually he figured it out but he can't call anybody down below until their time has come. With me being part demonic blood and part divine blood I never had a set end time, it was solely up to me when I'd return. Immortality does have some perks after all. It wasn't exactly safe back home so I was content to stay topside and do what I could to thwart his plans.

And then Dad captured a Porn Pixie and bound her to his will. He sent her topside too ... to deal with his errant daughter. I don't hate her for going up against me and using all her minions in attempts to cause my discorporation and subsequent return to Dad's domain. After all, she's just following her own orders. But I 'will' do everything I can to take her out of the picture.
