Yes I know what you're thinking. Helena, get out of that theater! But alas, here I am with the most complete movie guide of the season- with reviews of everything I've seen over the holidays. I'm sure my parents don't want to hear this, but my first 72 hours back in Boston will be one giant movie fest considering I MUST see 4 biggies before the Golden Globes (and they haven't yet been released in Fort Collins)- all of which look extremely promising: Revolutionary Road (excellent book too), Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler and Gran Torino. If you're interested, without having seen those four movies yet, these are my Golden Globes picks (I didn't include the television categories that I don't have an opinion about):
If I were a member of the Foreign Press (the group that chooses the Globes winners):

Yep, I'm sure very few of you care about these things, but I figure I'd post them anyways.
Now back to those promised reviews! I've seen a ton of movies this break (tickets are so cheap in Colorado compared to Boston!! $2-5.75 v. $8.50-$11) so if you were thinking of going to a movie- here's a large smattering to choose from! (yes, I admit- I saw Australia, Changeling, and Slumdog Millionaire again at the cheap seats- see previous posts for those reviews). And since there are many, I will keep it short.
Valkyrie- WWII Hitler assassination plot goes awry starring Tom Cruise (6/10 stars)
Aside from the fact that the first half of this movie wasn't particularly interesting, on the whole it ended up being a surprisingly decent movie. Though Tom Cruise was probably a poor choice (too young compared to the rest of the cast- also to American and not believably German), the rest of the cast did a convincing job, especially Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean, Girl in the Café), who was one of the film's strong points. Bottom line: decent movie, but could wait for DVD.
Doubt- Suspicions of a priest's bad behavior tear apart the church (5/10 stars)
Yes, I'm sure most film critics would disagree with this poor rating. I came into this movie with very high hopes. How could you go wrong with Meryl Streep, Phillis Seymore Hoffman and Amy Adams? The acting was indeed phenomenal. My complaint- this film is an adaptation of a play and the whole time I was thinking, why did they bother adapting it? This piece has nothing cinematic about it- it was clearly meant for the theater and should have stayed that way. And no, I haven't seen in on stage, but the whole thing screams theater to me. It is all about the dialogue not the image and image is what makes film what it is. Without it, we would all be paying $10 on a friday night to listen to a good old radio play. Not to mention that the story itself almost seems too simple to be made into such a long movie. 5 stars only for the acting and cinematography. Bottom line: check it out on DVD for the acting, see it in a theater for the experience.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button- Brad Pitt is born as an old man and gets younger with age (8/10 stars)
I was surprised by this movie. Yes, it got good press, but what a stupid concept! An infant that is born all wrinkly and arthritic turns into a man turns into an infant with Alzheimers. However, it was a pretty legit (there's some college slang for you) movie and enjoyable despite it's near 3 hour running time. Now this one is worth your money. My major complaint: they shot the film in digital, meaning what could have been a beautiful and rich piece of art is filled with dark shadows and underexposed areas that just didn't show up so well. The film also demonstrates that Brad Pitt is young Robert Redford's twin. The similarities are uncanny. Bottom line: if you're going to the movie theater, consider going to this film. Definitely worth your while on DVD if you don't make it to the theaters. One of my top 10 of the year.
The Reader- A young law student learns his former lover was a Nazi guard when he gets placed on her court trial (8/10 stars)
The book The Reader was absolutely phenomenal. I talked about it my last post. However, I wasn't sure how they would go about capturing such a philosophical book in cinematic form. Well, they didn't really, but it was still a great movie. The movie misses out on a lot of the inner thoughts and moral conflicts of the main character that the book illustrates so beautifully, but it is nonetheless a very compelling story without it. The images are done perfectly- exactly as how I imagined in the book. I highly highly highly recommend the book as well as the movie. Bottom line: Read the book first, then see the movie. One of my top 10 this year.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas- The young son of a Nazi official befriends an imprisoned jew, under the child's optimistic assumption that he is a farmer's son that always wears pajamas (6/10 stars)
Yes, it's the third holocaust movie I've seen over break. (What a happy way to spend the holidays, eh?) But this movie proved to be pretty cute. Certainly full of holes, but cute. Certainly not one of the best holocaust movies, but an interesting perspective. Bottom line: check out the DVD.
Marley and Me- Based on the best-selling book of the same title, a man's life changes drastically when he gets "the world's worst dog" who eventually turns into man's best friend (7/10 stars)
I avoided it. But, being the daughter of vets and having a soft spot for Owen Wilson, I eventually gave in. And surprised I was- I actually really enjoyed this movie! Sure it's not about to win any awards or go down in history, but it was a fun film with a side of seriousness that got plenty of laughs. Maybe it'll be in my top 10, maybe it won't. It won't be at the top, but it was definitely a good afternoon. (Warning, however: bring your tissue box!) Bottom line: if you're looking for a fun film, this is it. Theater or DVD, it's not one to skip if you have ever had a pet.
ALSO- MY TWO DVD RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE DAY:
The Lives of Others- A communist spy becomes increasingly interested and empathetic towards the high-profile couple he is spying on (10/10 stars)
Now this is a stellar movie. As much as I can enjoy a downer, there is nothing better than a film that is truly gratifying which leaves you with a better outlook on life. Recent example of what I consider a gratifying film: Slumdog Millionaire. Though this movie isn't quite as "user-friendly" as Slumdog, it was well worth the wait. As a lengthy, subdued, subtitled German film, I wasn't sure I'd make it through despite many NYFA teachers telling me, "you have to watch this movie!" But, when push came to shove (with a 1 hour nap intermission), I made it through and boy was it worth it! This film makes you feel like there is good in humanity and that good karma does exist- and isn't that a lot to expect of an East German communist spy film? I highly recommend it! Suffer through the first half because it will be worth it after all- it's just slow to get into. Bottom line: Possibly in my top 20 of all time. See it.
Schindler's List- The classic holocaust epic that tells the true tale of one man who saves the lives of more than 1,100 people (20/10 stars)
Well, in true form of my holiday (3 holocaust movies so far), we decided to revisit Schindler's List. Though I wouldn't consider it gratifying per-se, it's one of those films where throughout its course, you develop a strong sense of unconditional regard for the main character. I consider this to be one of the greatest films ever made and despite its tough subject and epic length, it is epically worth the watch. Bottom line: One of the best of the best. See it.
Well, that's all for tonight. Tomorrow, I will explain why mom and I spent hours chasing sparrows through our house... More to come <3 HRB
