Ok. I'm fed up. I used to be one of those fans who felt the show (pick a show, any show) was OURS and got angry at the powers that be for messing with stuff. But then I grew up, and got some perspective ( Read more... )

Hello! This is something from a recent interview (not Torchwood related), about spoilers. The interview was far more wide-ranging, but this is the spoilers bit!

From Richard Armitage, who was of course in Robin Hood. "Spoilers are the bane of my world. I just don’t get why one would want to spoil the ending. It’s like hunting for Christmas presents and then having to feign surprise on Christmas day. The reader is setting himself up for disappointment. Also one makes a judgement on what the ending may be and without ‘the journey’ that judgement is clouded, but worse than that, once you have decided, through ‘reading a spoiler’, that the ending is not what you wanted, then it’s almost impossible for the unfolding of the story to actually change the judgment you have made. It’s like a jury member privately deciding in advance a guilty verdict, despite overwhelming evidence. I say ‘don’t do it’. Do not seek out your Christmas presents, they may not even be for you, then how disappointed will you be! However, some people believe the frenzy of expectation, prompted by being fed little crumbs of spoiler, can have a good effect. I am dubious. ..."

I haven't seen TW yet, and to be honest the furore is turning me off slightly. I will see it eventually, though. :)

I've read many a similar comment. I'm torn between the enjoyment I get from the anticipation spoilers provide (I argued that this is a distinct form of entertainment in my thesis) and the thrill that an unspoiled narrative can provide. I think it depends on what you enjoy, and what the text can offer. Thanks for posting the quote.

And don't let the furore turn you off. TW:CoE is probably a masterpiece.

Link here to interview, so I meet with their rules for quoting. I don't want to break any rules!
