Found out about this article via greycoupon.

Short version for those who don't want to click: Bawww! Fans hated the finale. That's cuz they just didn't GET it. They didn't get it cuz they're GURLZ SHIPPERS ( Read more... )

Hee, I realized I had more to say, but everybody was busy assuring me I'm not alone about my K/L finale feelings. Woohoo!

(And really, the pigeon? I figured RDM was just trying to be an Artsy Television Guy and throw something in that *looked* cool and symbolic and left people wondering what it meant. To me it was a pretty small moment, so I think it's funny how it's become a symbol of Everything Wrong With Daybreak for some fans. *g*)

Anyway, back to Grazier sucking. The fail is on three levels:

1. Some people hated the finale for completely non-shipper reasons.
2. Some *shippers* hated the finale for reasons that didn't involve the ship. Being a shipper and caring about other things are not mutually exclusive! (Uh, for most people anyway.)
3. The people who *are* upset because they were let down by the romantic pairing they were invested in? Have a frakking right to feel that way, too! Funny thing about a show that's all about the "characters" -- people tend to give a shit about them, not just how an FTL drive works.

Also his random insult kind of came out of nowhere in that interview. Like he was asked about people who attacked him (I guess?) about the finale science-wise, and he immediately deflected it by mocking fangirls. :-/

I know even a few K/L shippers liked it! Just not many. ;p

It's just such an easy target! It became a symbol, though not the way he intended. ;) I still need someone to make that Nickleback "Hero" Kara-vid with footage of the pigeon flying heroically into the unknown.

"Why I thought the K/L ending was lame" probably needs its own post, and I don't think I'll bother because the identity crisis gets too weird. *g* But one thing that bothers me on a meta level... they were the only relationship on the show that was set up as romantic from the very beginning. (The only one that survived, I mean.) Roslin/Adama *rebels* happened by accident and because the actors and the audience wanted it, Helo was supposed to die, and I somehow doubt they planned Caprica/Gaius and Ellen/Saul walking off into the sunset together from the start either. Which is not at all to say they are less worthy (you probably know that coming from me, but still.) It just strikes me that they're the only relationship that ended with a huge statement about how they were ~broken~ and ~never meant to be.~ And yeah, they were broken and fucked up, individually and as a pair, but they were hardly the only couple that was true of! (And I think this is where some of the comparison resentment comes into play? Like not who deserved to be happy because it's not about that, but if Kara and Lee specifically didn't get to be happy because of this one fuck-up... really, other happy couples? It's a writing criticism, not a character criticism.) It just seems a little too much to me like Making A Statement about not conforming to viewer expectations (which they purposefully fed to sell dvds, but whatever.) And like, if you purposefully write the story to upend expectations, you're... still letting expectations determine what you write, just in a weirder way.

I have no idea if that made any sense. BUT I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOUR THREE LEVELS OF FAIL. Especially:Funny thing about a show that's all about the "characters" -- people tend to give a shit about them, not just how an FTL drive works.

Notice how they were all about characters and relationships when people were criticizing Unfinished Business. *eyeroll*

Like he was asked about people who attacked him (I guess?) about the finale science-wise, and he immediately deflected it by mocking fangirls. :-/

Ahaha. I know. "So people have been criticizing your science-advising, which was your job which you got paid for?"

... "LOL Girlz"

"LOL Girlz indeed!"

Love how the interviewer just went with it, too. :/

I mean, just shut UP and we'll go our separate ways in a fizzling out we'll-always-have-Pegasus kind of breakup way, but oh nooooo, show, you can't do that, you keep picking up the phone at 3am when you're drunk to drag shit up.

This seriously made me laugh for like five minutes. So we're even. ;) *sporfles*

But seriously. I've been trying with some small measure of success to fanwank my way into being happy with some parts of the ending. Now I just want to be ultra- bitter again to spite this douchebag. ;p

It did to me, and I agree. One of the things I hated about it the most was that it felt like it was done that way just to be shocking and dicky. "Take that, girls!"

Okay good, I'm glad I'm not completely out on a limb here.

It's because it makes for HILARIOUS ICONS that help deal with the pain, OKAY? *g*

(Well and for me, it's because RDM's "I don't know what the pigeon means and I don't care" sums up the shitty writing of the final season very neatly.)
