Dal had a "referendum" last week to see if students supported the plans for renovating, revamping and building new student spaces around campus (which we are in desperate need of)

Students voted no. Why? Because they're fucking university students and failed to realize that this whole thing was organized by students for students and instead decided that since it was too well advertised (and only the "yes" side, seeing as the "no" side would be to keep as is) they VOTED NO.

(obviously they don't have classes in the LSC...)

Then I got an email from the president of the science society asking people for their opinions on the subject, so I thought "what the hell" and actually sent him an email.

Hello,
I got the email saying that you want feedback on the yes.dal.ca campaign, so I decided that I should throw in my 2 cents.

First off I should say that I did vote "yes". I think that most people who have more than one class in the LSC were at least intrigued at the possibility of making that building suck less. I was thoroughly disappointed when the overall vote was "no" though I do have a lot of ideas why this was. First: university students are the most self-righteous people on the face of the planet. A lot of the people who I talked to who voted no did so for one reason, they didn't see any no.dal.ca signs. I think they perceived that there was some sort of biased mentality and even though they may have personally liked the idea of fixing up places, voted no simply on principle. This is a truly disheartening thing, since it wasn't Dal who was trying to press it on them, it was other students, and "no" simply meant keep it as is. I think some people who voted no did so for more grounded reasons, there was very little solid plans about what exactly was going to be done, the whole thing was sort of foggy and this ambiguity was surrounded by the ton of yes.dal.ca posters, which I think came to be interpreted as mere propaganda.

I think overall more solidified plans should be presented to the student body about what exactly will be done and how and when it will be done. I know a lot of people who thought that they were going to have to start paying for the buildings now, even though they're in 3rd and 4th year and wouldn't be around to enjoy them. I also think the 10$/class needs to be better presented/thought out. I know that it isn't a lot, an extra 100$ per year, but where dal's tuition is already so high, many people feel like this just adds to it. I think ways should be discussed to maybe seek more outside funding or incorporating it into existing fees somehow. I think it's mostly just the perception of having to pay more that gets to people.

As I said, I was disappointed by the results of the referendum, but I think it is a predictable (though frustrating) outcome based on the marketing strategy to the target audience.

Hope this helps when you go discuss things,
Alison
