farmer's granddaughter

Nov 11, 2008 21:12

on veterans' day my grandfather told me
a few years ago he found a knot in his groin
area but the mri revealed it mere fatty tissue.

i asked whether they told him to exercise
more. he laughed and told me that his november
garden yielded turnips, radishes, kale, and pecans

and how is mine doing? i said i got so busy with
visiting that i only got in some spinach and kale
and cabbages, and that only the spinach survived.

you let yer travelin' in'erfere with yer farmin',
he said. next year i'll know to stay home, i said.
he worried about the blue slime eggs that ate my

kale and cabbages, whether i had figured out how to
combat them. i said i'd read up on it this winter so
next year i'd know what to do. he sold thirty calves

this week at the sale barn. asked after my woodpile
and whether i'd have enough to keep warm this winter.
reminded me that he fell in love with my new england

until a local woman said we'd had uh-hunert-an'-fifty-four
inches of snow last year and then he fell out of love
right quick. i told him maybe he wasn't in as in love

as he thought he was. he said no i reckon not. i said
i have an early meeting and he said hon i sure do love
you an' appreciate yer calls an' you be good now an' let us hear from you.
