Would you cross the picket line to go grocery shopping at the stores (Safeway, Fred Meyer, Albertsons and QFC) whose workers are threatening to strike, if they do end up striking? Why?

It would make me feel uncomfortable and gross.

I would have to see why the owners aren't giving the employees what they want. This is usually reason enough to not support the company.

Plus, Jimmy.

But Jimmy's store is golden, they aren't striking, I'd imagine it'd make his store even busier...

So the question seems to break down this way:
1. Do you feel sympathy for workers?
2. Is your own feelings of inconvenience outweighed by worker-sympathy?

Personally, I feel more aligned to workers than owners. I'd probably just go to Trader Joes.

Very good point, breaking it down like that.

Do you already shop at those stores? I feel like I wouldn't really cross them because I don't shop at those stores (occassionally we do shop at Safeway and that's where we get our RX's filled)..

Yeah, I go to Safeway because it's just down the street. I'd say my shopping is split 60% Safeway, 40% Trader Joe's.

If you need any other Kirkland alternatives, we have the Metropolitan Market and PCC in my neighborhood. I love those stores like whoa. Combined with TJ's and Costco, that's about 95% of our shopping with the ocassional Safeway and/or QFC

I thought about you too. Apparently the last grocery workers strike was in 1989 and Safeway was a part of that. I don't remember if my mom crossed the picket lines..

So will the strike affect you? I'd imagine it would increase your store's sales. Do you want them to strike?

Nope. I'm not a big fan of unions, but I don't cross picket lines. If the union can get that many people to sit outside and carry stupid signs, there's probably a reason.

See I think that not all workers want to strike and are involuntarily in the union, so that's why I'd be ok crossing the picket line.

I dunno - the last time the UW union threatened a strike, I thought they had a valid point. Like most of the state, we had been getting hit with cutback after cutback. I was doing at least three people's jobs all by myself. My boss was sad about it, but said there wasn't money in the budget to reclass me to get me more money.

The bad thing is that I worked in Payroll, see, and I saw that she and the other manager had just been given a MASSIVE promotion, kicking them up both up into the six-figure range ( ... )

That makes a lot of sense. In times like these, we have to all make sacrifices and it's absurd they would increase management's pay and reduce yours. Ugh.

In order to not have to form an opinion, I'll just not go to any of these stores. I mostly use Amazon Fresh anyway.

How are you liking Amazon Fresh? Do you get a lot of produce? How is it?
