BSG Blues, Fanlib Drama, & 300

I've slowly started long overdue forays into the fandom communities, despite the fact I've been pressed for time between work-training, meet ups with all the right people, mommy-visiting, frolicking with the brother, Skyping like a madwoman, and mom-listening. I have yet to write a BSG fic dated in the long wait for the next season. The Roslin in my head wants sexxing and the smut is reluctant to make an appearance.

Fan fiction writers everywhere: PLEASE READ EVERYTHING BELOW THE LINE

__________

FanLib.com seems to have stirred the wrath and general brilliance of the LJ fanfic community. I've been reading a number of meta at metafandom (DO VISIT THE COMMUNITY AND START READING) regarding the fiasco that is the site, especially in terms of being paid to write fic. This is problematic as fanfic has been a voluntary act; the writer exepcts nothing in return except feedback and the worship of one's readers and is perpetually hoping she/he won't get sued, thus their disclaimers.

After all, there is the problem of being thoroughly smacked for "stealing" intellectual property. The fact that the owners of the site have been egging ignorant fic-writers to write for them, only shows that this blurry line hasn't been explained and can be exploited on the part of the site's owners. They are working under the precedent that legitimacy for fic-writers could be had by being paid/recognized by the general public.

If you've read the latest academic papers written on fan fiction, one can say that fan fiction is a legitimate form of literature for the simple reason that it recalls the palimpsest, can be derivative, and draws from the faculty of creation (see "Fanfiction and Fan Communities in the Age of the Internet", edited by Karen Hellekson and Kristina Busse). Also, that fan fiction itself has a vested interest in prOn, slash-goodness, and general queerness.

I suggest you fic writers out there start reading and educate yourselves about all the frakkin' shite goin' on:

Fanlib by kitesareevil
Fanlib.com: sexism, misogyny, ignorance, oh my! by bookshop
Meta: On FanFiction, FanLib, blah blah by phaballa
FanLib, a story of pilot-fish and teal deer by rez_lo
Fanlib by lexin

And there's more at metafandom; just run through the links and get yourself informed, especially those of you who actually write fan fiction. I also suggest you spread the word and get other fic writers out there informed as well. Perchance you could form your own opinion and tell us what you think.

And since the picture amused me so much, I also found this very interesting picture at 300_movie:
