My Sister died this morning.
Rebecca was the sibling most like me in many ways. She and I were always able to relate to one another even though she was several years older than I. Bright and funny Beck was fond of fashion and had talent that way, both in design and in personal style. After school Beck spent almost a decade in NYC then decided she wanted to attend the NYU's Fashion Institute of Technology she took the entrance test cold. They had never seen anyone score as well as she did. After school Beck did a few things in NYC but in time Asia drew her interest and she went to Thailand. She lived in Thailand for a while importing colorful fabrics and items like scarves. She was pretty happy living on the back of a motorbike for a bit. In Thailand Beck also found more of a spiritual home as she identified with Buddhist beliefs. Eventually the grind of trying to crack NYC's fashion house buying got to her and she returned home.
She tried a few things in NYC but seemed to drift for a bit like the restless soul she was. She meet a few men but frankly her taste in men left something to be desired. The relationships didn't last and Beck would spend time at the Ashram or another spiritual retreat after they had ended. In the last few years of her life she met John. He stayed with her until the end. It was a long hard road and he walked it with her. For that measure of grace I'm thankful.
Beck, like my brother and I, ended up working with computers. Like everything she did she was exceptional at it. Beck lead the team that did the NYSE peoplesoft conversion. Later she would take the knowledge she had and work in the television industry behind the scenes. She was successful, had a good relationship with John, and seemed to have come to terms with her restlessness.
She began to feel ill and after much cajoling by her mother and our sister Jeni she went and got checked out. She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer late stage 3. They tried surgery and chemo but the odds were never good, less than 3% over 5 years seemed to be the average quoted. She fought bravely and seemed for a while to have beaten it. But it came back and had metastasized. Eventually it reached her Lymph Nodes, her spine, and just recently her brain. She underwent radiation but soon after suffered a heart attack then a stroke. She was soon hospitalized and my sister called me to let me know her condition. I flew to New York and Beck was in terrible shape. We were able to share a few lucid moments but she tired quickly and was weakening fast. The day after I saw her she deteriorated rapidly my sister and her mother never leaving her bedside. Over 14 hours they provided what comforts they were able before she passed at 5:30 this morning.
Today this world is an infinitely poorer place.
