*After awakening and finding Elanor gone, Frodo settles down to pen a note to Merry.
Merry,
Just wanted to let you know I arrived safely at Elly's last night. I'm doing well, although the world is wet and rainy here. Elly went out for the day, so I thought I should post to you. I hope all is well with you. I myself didn't know she was expecting either, until a few days ago, but she's due any day now, I believe, hence part of my hurried desire to see her, and help her before the birth. I'll ask if she wouldn't mind seeing you during this time, otherwise I will visit when I am next able to. Take care.

*he seals the letter up and trudges out into the rain to post it. Part of him wants to see Merry right now -- and he could probably make the journey to Brandyhall today, while Elanor was out -- but the other part of him dreaded to see how strange things would be between them. Having Merry come to the Undertowers would be strange too, for Frodo wasn't sure how well he'd be able to deal with having Elanor and Merry together at the same time, and be relatively unattached to both of them.*
