have some fic excerpts

A few bits and pieces from stuff I have sitting on my hard drive in one form or another right now. Please note, none of these are guaranteed to ever become part of a finished fic. Then again, they all might.

-----------

From "the one about Yinsen":

That night, on her way home, she stops at a church.

She has no idea why. She's never been a church-goer, her parents were lapsed Catholics and she's never liked the idea of anyone having control over her life except her.

But she goes into the church, and she lights a candle for a man called Yinsen, even though she's not a church-goer and she doesn't know if "Yinsen" was his first or last name, or even if it was his real name, or if he was a Christian or any kind of other religion, or what he looked like or what he sounded like, or anything, really. Except that he helped Tony get back home, for whatever reason, and even though Tony didn't say so, she knows he died to help Tony get back home. And this is the only thing she can think of to memorialize him.

From "the one about the workshop":

“There are two rules down here,” he’s saying, his voice totally serious, no mischievous twinkle in his eyes. “No one comes in here when I’m not, and don’t move anything unless I ask you to.”

“What about the cleaning service?”

He shakes his head. “Not allowed. I take care of things down here.”

“All right. When should - “

She gives a startled yelp as a voice suddenly comes from everywhere and nowhere to say, “Good morning, Miss Potts.”

That gleam is back in Mr. Stark’s eyes. “Ah, yeah, forgot. That’s JARVIS. Just A Really Very Intelligent System. Made him myself.” He raises his eyebrows. “Little late, there, honey, she’s been here for over an hour.”

“Sir, you placed a delay in my programming code with the express wish that I ‘scare the skirt off her’.”

That cool British voice is just so absurd, Pepper starts to laugh, and Mr. Stark grins back. “That’s totally inappropriate, and it’ll never happen again,” he says.

From "the one with Cap which I shouldn't be writing because the movie just started shooting yesterday":

There is the sound of gunfire somewhere in the distance, some wooshing, an explosion, but she keeps working through the painters as Steve pulls her up.

Then a crash jolts through her legs and there's Tony.

"Doing my job for me again?" he asks.

"You were pretty busy back there."

"Yeah, well. She's my girlfriend." The helmet opens up and Pepper sees the vague, childish pout on his face as he leans close to take stock of her. She has to bite her lip to keep from giggling hysterically.

"You wanna cover me while I get her out of here, or did you want to carry her off into the sunset, too?" Tony asks as soon as he's assured himself that she won't stop breathing in the next ten minutes.

"Hey, you're welcome to -"

"Oh, for god's sake," she says, her voice sounding weird and harsh in her throat, "Can you save the pissing contest for when -"

She never finishes her sentence, because that's the moment when the world explodes.
