my favourite Bess

Realized that, tho' I hinted at this in the podcast, I never came right out & said who my favourite on-screen Queen Elizabeth I is. She is, without a doubt, Glenda Jackson in Elizabeth R from the '70s BBC production that aired on Masterpiece Theater in the U.S. This was actually what sucked me into history & costume as a kid in the very first place ( Read more... )

Glenda Jackson is my favorite Elizabeth as well, both in the series Elizabeth R and the film Mary Queen of Scots, with Vanessa Redgrave. Actually the young Elizabeth that I like is the one played by Jean Simmons in the old film Young Bess. So much fire and brilliance. But Blanchett's was definitely very fine. Of the more recent portrayals, I actually very much liked Anne Marie Duff's performance, even as the older queen. She was definitely giving Ms Jackson a run for her money!

Elizabeth R is out on DVD, or at least it was, I have the set myself. It's very much worth having, as there are some great "making of" featurettes, one of which is about her costumes.

Well, you know what Erasmus says, "When I have a little money, I buy books. If I have any left over, I buy food." Add DVDs to the books, and that about covers me!

I'm officially a terrible costumer, as I rented this version and only made it thru about 20 min. I always have a hard time with 1970s and earlier videography. But I know I really need to watch it!

I have to admit, the fact that it looks like it was filmed in 1970 is hard to set aside in the first, oh, hour of the series. Mostly, for me the hardest thing to get over was the Caked. On. Makeup. they plastered all over Glenda Jackson's handsome face to try to age her down about ten years. Once you get through that first episode, it shoots forward to around age 30 or so and they ease off the Ben Nye a lot ( ... )
