I Am Lazarus

Part I here

'Ladies first' may have been a bit overly optimistic. Snow stumbles on the first step away from the wall, right arm curled across his stomach, and hand pressed bloodless against his rib cage. I’m so glad that you liked the chapter. And you’re right: I was very excited to finally get to write this chapter. It took a long time to get to the reunion, and I really wanted there to be a payoff for everyone who stuck with it. In chapter 10, Lightning had to face the reality of Snow’s death, and her own inability to do anything to prevent it. That moment is what has allowed her to act on her feelings for him. The Lightning of Chapter 9 loved Snow, but would never have allowed herself to indulge that feeling by kissing him, or allowing him to kiss her in turn. When Snow tells Lightning that he is hers, she didn’t panic and freak out as she did in Chapter 1, because her near loss of him proved so much more terrifying than simply admitting the truth of their feelings for one another.
I wanted there to be some of the playfulness In their relationship that I so enjoy writing In Evolution. These two characters were the first that I feel I got to know while writing them, and the Comedies and tragedies That They face Together in Evolution Really led to some of my favorite scenes.
(Of course, I love all the characters, and I truly love using moments of levity - Fang sucker punching Lightning, for example- to help break up the depressing horror of the overall story. I wanted some of that in this chapter. Hence, Snow saying ‘that your way of calling me fat?’ Out of nowhere. After 11 chapters of nonstop angst and depravity, I figured a little sweetness and lighthearted banter was well deserved.

Yeah, the chapter ended a bit down, but my poor Snow is in a terrible way right now. He suffered terribly, and he can’t seem to impress upon Lightning how much her lack of self-preservation hurts and scares him. He’s off his game, the poor dear. I think he’s earned the right to be angry at Light. But fear not: they will have words once this is all over. 😏

And to be honest, that’s the chapter that I think everyone has been waiting for since the first sentence of this story was written. And that chapter? That’s done. I just need to get us there. Only one or two left to go. Don’t lose hope yet. They’re almost through the darkness.

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing!
