Well so lets see here. Today was my first day meeting almost everyone at the hotel and seeing where everything is and learning my role here in conjunction with everyone else. I think everything is going to go pretty fast because I have so much I have to learn from each department. I have a tentative training schedule which is flexible to me depending on how I'm doing in each department. Monday I start in banquets and I'll be there for at least four weeks. Then I do Front Office, Kitchen, Firelake (restaurant - amazing!!!) Housekeeping/laundry, engineering, sales/marketing/reservations/catering, accounting, purchasing, Manager On Duty/Security, GM/HR and wrap up to determine the month of December and whatnot. So I have a ton of stuff to "study" and go over. I got my work email going today - I was having issues logging in. And I already have like 30 emails to go over after I write this because it was active to receive emails but I couldnt get in there to check it.
I also took a grand tour of this place and its not a freestanding hotel. Its connected to other buildings, such as the Plaza 7 tower, which is floors 17-35 of offices, mostly lawyers. Theres also "the skyway" which is a series of hallways that connect all these big buildings and its really great because I went about 4 blocks without going outside. Its connected to Nicolett Mall, where there is a Fedex, Starbucks, Gap, Banana Republic, Verizon, Mamas Pizza, etc. Theres also a HUGE atrium there with water dripping from the ceiling and falling onto this huge circle of marble on the floor, a fountain if you will but instead of the water spraying up, its dropping from the ceiling. Its really cool. So I went through there and got some stamps and then went out the back door of that mall and there was a Barnes and Noble/Panera Bread (which i could have gotten to above ground, but I was just wandering like I knew where I was going) and across the street there was a target that is about 3 stories high. I went in the ground level there and picked up some things and on my way out I saw a good number of people going up an escalator right there. So I hopped on and at the top, it connected to another big building, and I went through the hall and discovered a subway, where I grabbed dinner, and I walked through there and found that I had gone in a circle! How convenient! So this took me back to my hotel, and now I'm just going to chill and cat nap and go through all my stuff. Tomorrow is another 8:15am day where I'll continue my tour (apparently I haven't seen everything yet). This morning in the 9am meeting, I got sick to my stomach whenever I would concentrate on the fact that this is it; this is what my past 4 years have built up to; i am not a kid anymore (not that i thought i was but my level of responsibility was nil) and holy shit do i have a ton of stuff to know and do and be in charge of. But it will all build up little by little and shouldn't be any harder than anything ive had to do in the past, just more concentrated and important.
As far as anyone who wants to come up, if there is a time that you know you are able to come here, you can do that and I will see what I can do about having it off, however it will really depend on business needs - I told the director that I expect to be the person that everyone can rely on - the hotels live in bitch - and although I only spend a couple weeks in each department delving into the nitty gritty, if they need an extra set of hands I'm easily adaptable. So, having that said, if I know enough ahead of time when I will have some downtime I will let you know. During my time in high volume departments it will be harder to tell if I can take time off. So let me know, flights should be less than $300. way less actually. And it would make me so happy to have friends visit. Everything is so easy here, in terms of transportation. Everyone is so nice and theres SO MUCH TO DO!!!!
