The end of the world as we know it...

And I feel fine.

That's what I woke up to this morning- at least, promises of the same. There was an almighty dust storm in Sydney and an extended area in New South Wales and Southern Queensland; hail stones the size of golf balls were falling elsewhere, and here in Victoria we had earth tremors. Brimstone and treacle were moments away.

But nothing happened. Instead we had a sunny breezy if cool day. I'm not really disappointed. I'm not.

It's been a while since I was here. Lots of stuff has been happening. A couple of highlights:

Tex Perkins in 'The Man in Black', singing Johnny Cash songs which suited his voice so well it was a dream. A wonderful night. I went for Tex, rather than Johnny Cash's songs, I confess. Though it was an ideal mix.

A play by Yasmin Reza called 'God of Carnage', translated from the French by Christopher Hampton. This play has done the rounds internationally, including winning best play at the 2009 Tony awards. We were lucky enough to see a performance by the Melbourne Theatre Company, with Hugo Weaving, and two of my other faves Pamela Rabe and Geoff Morrell. It was consummately performed, and very funny- satirical, witty and with a lot of physical comedy too. This says it better than I can.

I am reading what feels like a gazillion books at the moment; I've seen some fabulous but very bleak Australian films, and one rom com billed as a departure from the norm- '(500) Days of Summer'- which I went to looking for light-hearted distraction but which sadly missed the mark- for me, anyway. I have indulged in Season One of 'Rome'- such rich fare, belatedly consumed. And I love it SO much. Heady stuff. The first two episodes of Season 2 have now been absorbed too.

The song haunting me at present is Paul Dempsey's 'Ramona Was A Waitress' from his new solo album (where he played all the instruments, and wrote all the songs). I love his lyrics; and suspect these songs will weave their way into my brain and will repay a number of listens. Here is a link to the video clip of Ramona. Paul dancing? Very nice too!

And finally, please have a pic of the cat who lives in the same house as me, just because.
