Well I came into the office to do a little work, but it seems our IT guy is about to take the server offline for some sort of upgrading, so I don't know how much I'll be able to write at the moment. Guess I'd better get to it.
Let's see, Friday I went over to Scott and Melissa's for dinner (before which I got to accompany them to the doctor's office so Nathan could have his ear infection checked, and then to Target to get the toy Nathan was promised for being a good boy during his check-up). After dinner we watched "O Brother Where Art Thou?", which was kind of funny since AJ and I had just seen Ralph Stanley last weekend and heard him talk about "that movie, O Brother Where You At?".
I had heard so much about it already that I pretty much knew not only the "plot", such as it was, but most of the scenes as well. That's pretty much what it was anyway - a two hour collection of offbeat "situations"; it never seemed to come together as a story (after about an hour Melissa said "when is this going to go somewhere?"). But it was enjoyable, and the music was good.
Saturday I went down to the Mall to check out the Folklife Festival, which I mean to do every year but have only done once or twice. The "themes" this year were 'New York City', 'Bermuda', and the 'Traditional Building Arts'. Not surprisingly, I spent most of my time in the latter section. There was a lot of interesting stuff going on, and it was an absolutely beautiful day, so I'm glad I made it this year.
Around 4:00 I left to go stand in line at the Birchmere in Alexandria, so that when the box office opened at 5:00 I could get a very low "seating number", which I did (#4), which meant that when the doors to the music hall itself opened at 6:30, AJ and I could have our pick of primo seats for Doc Watson's 7:30 show. I then went back into DC and picked up AJ and we went back to the Brichmere, arriving at 6:03 only to find that they had opened the doors early - at 6:00 - and were already calling out #27. So although we got good seats, they weren't quite "the best". But it was still a really good concert and we both enjoyed it very much. And I'm going to have another shot at those best seats next month, when we go see The Seldom Scene.
Today Pei's Farewell Tour 2001 continued, as Nancy and I met her for dim sum at a Chinese restaurant in Rosslyn. We then went back to Pei's condo so that she could unload a few random items on us that she didn't want to pack but couldn't quite throw away (anybody want a mug from some unidentified Southwestern US tourist destination? It's got a donkey and a cactus on it). Hasn't she heard of ebay?
And now I am sitting here waiting for the server to go down. But since it still hasn't, I suppose I could do some work...
