The books are somewhat different from the series. While the first book corresponds roughly to the first season, there are a lot of differences, including some very major ones. The book is much shorter than the season for one -- or conversely, they had to stretch the book out to make the season. The book has fewer bodies than the season.
More significantly, the relationship with Rita and the kids is very different. As Fritter mentioned, in the books Dexter sees dark passengers in Cody and Aster. This does not seem to appear in the series at all (at least, through the first two seasons). In the books, Rita's ex-husband abused the kids (triggering their dark passengers) and ended up dead in prison before the books begin, rather than being a on-again/off-again character as in the series. In my opinion, the development of this relationship between Dexter and the kids is one of the more interesting things about the ongoing series.
The other differences between the first book and the first season are major, and spoilerific. They cause major divergences between the remaining series and books.
