For those of you who don't live in DC, never have, or have moved away, you have no idea what's going on in this town.
There is an impending sense of dread in the locals at the mega-swarms of people who will be coming to the historic inauguration of Barack Obama. I mean we're talking estimates of a million or two million people flooding a city that's not even a full hundred square miles (some of it seceded to virginia, a good chunk of a national park). Some people even have this deluded idea that they'll be able to get into and out of the city that day!
Honey, there are bridges closing, metro stations closed for a good chunk of the day, rail tickets have been SOLD OUT for commuter trains... It's absolute fucking insanity.
Can you imagine a million people forced to walk or take cabs in freezing weather? It's like the alice in wonderland version of 9/11 where everyone's happy that they have to walk ten miles to catch a cab.
Some of us, like myself, have taken up a sort of siege mentality. Hide yourself away from the hordes, and the wave will pass by like a tsunami leaving behind in its wake the unbelievable amount of cash spent on things like starbucks coffee and shitty hotel food at a ball.
I mean, I thought about going down to the mall. And then I thought again. And then I said oh hell no. And then I said AAAGGGHHH!!! Run away!
Bush has declared the District of Columbia to be in a state of emergency, and somehow this will release money and national guard troops as needed to keep the peace.
I will keep the peace at home in my jammie pants, watching history unfold on TV.
Chances are we'll see the guy around town anyway, since he's the kind of man to do that. He already ate at Ben's Chili Bowl, and chances are the first family and kids will be making appearances all over town. And who knows, he'll probably come to the library a few times anyway. Hell, Bush did...
