So I overheard two people talking in harvard sq last night about how to learn to be a carpenter. One, who seemed to have grown up in the US, seemed to think that the right approach was to spend $2K on some school in Maine or something. The other, who very obviously hadn't grown up in the US and spoke limited English, asserted that the correct approach was to find a carpenter, and offer to work for them for free for two or three weeks.
