The one quality I adore in music is its ability to be timeless. Simply put: a song you've liked at some point in the past is still a song you'd probably still like now. It would have the same or perhaps a deeper effect on you because of the memories attached to it.
Everybody Hurts by REM reminds me of how little we know about the people around us until it's too late; at some time in our lives someone we know, care about or love will die.
Sometimes death would even be self-inflicted. It's only then we question ourselves "why?". Why did this happen, why did they do it? Why didn’t they come to me? I guess the answer would be the same reason when depression wraps us in its bittersweet embrace. We would sometimes keep it to ourselves because we feel it’s a private hurt that no one else has ever felt and that no one could understand.
I really do feel that suicide is the coward's way out. It's true that everybody hurts and everybody has problems but we have to learn to deal with it. Imagine how much pain we would inflict on our loved ones if we decided to end our lives. No matter how bad things get, we should always remember that someone does care for us deeply. If we end our existence, not only do we destroy our own lives, we destroy the lives of the people around us too. So when you are at the end of your rope, just reach out! There'll be many who'll hold your hand!
If only we could all see the difference each and everyone of us makes to the world and the people in it, no matter how small or trivial the part we think we play. Someone would miss us all, someone else who hurts just like us, just like everybody does sometimes.
