[character]: Vexen

[character history / background]:
Once, Vexen went by the name of Even-- a brilliant scientist with a thirst for experimentation and knowledge. It was this very thirst that drove him to study the darkness of peoples' hearts alongside the five other apprentices of Ansem the Wise in the Radiant Garden (later known as Hollow Bastion). Even was the fourth of these apprentices.

Among these apprentices, there was one named Xehanort. When Ansem ended the experiments on the darkness, Xehanort kept them going in secret. Even, never being the type to turn a blind eye to the prospect of new knowledge, had little queries with working alongside him and the other four. They created beings known as Heartless, born of the hearts that became overwhelmed by darkness.

Unfortunately, one of the later experiments ended in failure-- or rather, disaster. The six studying the heartless ended up losing their own hearts to darkness. They became Nobodies; Beings lacking hearts, and by extension, incapable of feelings or emotions, and unable to possess light OR darkness. In a sense, they were nothing, yet they still existed.

Even became known as Vexen from then on, and was one of the six founding members of Organization XIII. Their new purpose was not to create heartless, but to study them in hopes of learning to obtain hearts of their own. Vexen produced many new experiments from then on before being assigned to their second base.

Since the time of the disaster, the Organization had grown. Six members were now thirteen, and it was the eleventh that was placed in charge of Castle Oblivion-- the second base. The eleventh member was named Marluxia, and he had come into the Organization with surprising power and abilities. It was hardly a surprise that the Superior left him in charge, even if it was to the distaste of some of the older other members, including Vexen himself. The Castle itself was thirteen floors high, with a basement (where the scientists Vexen, Zexion, and Lexaeus worked).

Rarely the type to take orders from ones he considered inferior, it took much of his patience to tolerate Marluxia, and he held absolutely no trust for him. His reasons for distrust escaped even his own notice, however, which is likely the only thing that kept him following orders from the shady eleventh member.

Eventually, he ended up working alongside the sixth member, Zexion, and the fifth, Lexaeus, in hopes of bringing Marluxia's plans to a halt. It became apparent that Marluxia had intended to use the Keybearer, Sora, to overthrow the Organization instead of using him as a puppet for the Organization.

In the process, he fought Riku and obtained the data he would need to create a replica. Using Naminé, he constructed a series of fake memories, ensuring that the replica Riku believed himself to be the original. It would be essential in testing the Keybearer's strength. Unbeknownst to him, however, his lack of attachment to it meant that he had gotten a bit careless. Naminé was manipulating the replica's memories-- something he had no knowledge of.

It got to the point where he ignored his newest creation, being distracted by the usual tactics of Marluxia, whom had practically ordered him to defeat the Keybearer in repentance for his 'failure'.

He was forced to confront Sora in order to keep their plans in motion; That is, in order to stop Marluxia from reporting his failure with the Replica Riku to the Superior. It was suspicious enough that his orders would be to defeat the Keyblade wielder, knowing full well that he was essential to the eleventh member's plans-- and as such, he concocted his own solution. That solution consisted of revealing Marluxia's true intent, and the existence of Sora's own Nobody, Roxas.

Though his exit from the tenth floor was less than graceful, the encounter on the eleventh went according to his plans. Wanting first to reveal the secret of Roxas's existence, he gifted the Keybearer with a card, telling him to use it. This news soon traveled to the conspiring group of Nobodys, resulting in the inevitable-- Vexen was branded a traitor, and Axel, needing to prove his 'trust' to Marluxia and Larxene, was ordered to eliminate him.

Though that was the case, Vexen did get close to achieving his goal. First, with luring Sora into Twilight Town-- a memory that the Keyblade bearer had no recollection of. He managed to tell Sora that his friend Riku's only destiny was to fall to darkness, and it was just as he was on the verge of revealing Roxas's existence, and of course, Marluxia's plan, that Axel finally confronted him, managing to silence him just in time despite the scientist's begging for the contrary.

[character abilities]:
Intelligence aside, he does possess a very unique ability: Vexen has control over ice. This isn't limited to ice that already exists, either. He can make it out of seemingly nothing, and manipulate it in nearly any way imaginable; Balls of ice, glaciers rising up from the ground, a stream of deadly ice-needles, and so on.

He can also summon a large, blue shield, which he fights with. This shield also has some rather menacing spikes around the top, and serves the useful purpose of blocking most frontal attacks.

[character personality]:
Technically, he has no real 'personality' to speak of. He has no feelings or emotions-- however, he has the memory of what it was like to feel. These memories left an impression on his current behavior.

On that note, for a man incapable of feeling anger, Vexen has quite a short temper at times. This is particularly noticeable in regards to matters concerning his lab work. He gets easily impatient with those who interrupt him without reason (think: a cranky old man). As well, though he can act superior at times, he has many moments where, had he been able to feel fear, he would have clearly been afraid. In fact, he has a strong sense of "self-preservation", preferring to keep himself safe and allow others to handle the direct danger.

As far as matters concerning rank are considered, he loathes being ordered around by someone he considers inferior to him, meaning that he has quite the streak of pride. He's also easily provoked, often making him the first to begin inquiries, but isn't always content to do so on his own, sometimes choosing to enlist the aid of others-- moreso as a meat shield to study the effects of a situation on than anything else. In essence, his experiments always serve as the first priority. He'll question for the sake of seeking answers, and he'll go to troublesome lengths to acquire data.

However, he pays little attention to what follows a completed experiment once he's convinced that he's learned all he can from it. This is because, as a scientist, he is more involved with the research aspects and coming up with the solutions, rather than being the one to enforce them. On a related note, he will act on his own if he is distrustful of the others on his side, a prime example being his refusal to follow Marluxia's orders and subsequent 'treachery' because of it.

Vexen is extremely intelligent and makes no effort to hide it. Most of what he says is accompanied by a feat of logic, and is often concluded by some cynical remark or another. Data and statistics, science and research-- if you know it can't be proved, bringing it up is futile. His entire 'existence' seems to revolve around his work as a scientist. This penchant for experimentation is the most obvious cause for any of his rash actions. He won't stand for disruptions or condescension of his work, and he would go to desperate lengths for the purpose of demonstration if ever the usefulness of his creations is questioned. As a man more inclined to base his actions on data, you can think of it as a prominent button that stands out from the rest of his personality-- push it at your own risk.

Finally, he may put an almost 'loving' effort into the making and testing of his creations, but he feels no particular attachment to them beyond their immediate purpose. After all, what's been broken can always be replaced-- and with added improvements from the learned mistakes. It should never be forgotten that Vexen has no true emotions (convincing though his behaviour may be to the contrary), and the effort he does put into his creations, he views as a reflection of his own talent and ability than he does as a separate entity (basically: he views the accomplishments of his experiments as his own accomplishments rather than theirs).

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Post death, after Axel fries him.

[journal post]:
[Private//unhackable]
That asinine--! [Fast, heavy breathing for a few seconds, but it doesn't take him long to regain his composure.] As number VIII, he shouldn't have been questioning my intentions. The shackles grow ever tighter, and within moments, the Keybearer will become nothing more than Marluxia's obedient puppet.

[/Private]

Needless though it may be to put into words. [A cold, clear voice, if somewhat arrogant in tone-- it's not in his nature to dismiss the fact that he doesn't know who he's speaking to.]

I assume that there are answers to seek. While I may be partially mistaken in my assessment of your willingness to provide them, I regardless remain convinced of the potential to extract data from the source of our communication.

[third person / log sample]:
For a minute, there was only silence-- Vexen could still hear those last words echoing through his mind.

Now you can be nothing instead of just nobody.

The scientist was no stranger to the corridors of darkness. He used them, analyzed them, factored them into his every experiment. There were those that walked in the light, those that walked in the darkness, and those that were somebody yet nobody-- the ones that walked the twilight between. Yet it was neither the darkness nor the light that brought on his closest semblance to fear, but the prospect of finality: an end to his 'existence' as a whole. There was no data to reveal what followed death, a fact that remained just as true to a Nobody as it did to those who weren't lacking a heart. Something that no amount of experimentation had yet been able to uncover-- something that even Vexen had no illusions of learning. This, of all possibilities, was one he had never planned to explore firsthand. However, it hadn't succeeded. Whether through an unknown variable, or a careless mistake on Axel's behalf, Vexen was obviously not 'nothing'.

Putting the thought into that context was no better than considering himself a part of his own experiment. The details unknown, but the concept the same.

Vexen had noted the consistent ticking noise moments after his 'arrival', black cloak trailing over the unfamiliar ground as he eyed the buildings. Surprise was another emotion he lacked the heart to feel, but nevertheless, it was written quite clearly in his features. If only that traitor hadn't interfered...

It was absurd that the events had been allowed the chance to escalate as they had.

Though he doubted that he still maintained any connection with the Organization while in this strange land, it remained true that now there was nothing to halt Marluxia's plan-- the Keyblade master would soon become his pawn. He, who understood so little and comprehended so few of the Organization's goals, the same Neophyte that questioned his rank as number IV had not only received an opportunity that he had not, but had been ushered into a position of authority over him. The very suggestion of him taking charge of Oblivion had been one that Vexen disagreed with from the beginning.

For the moment, he knew that dwelling on such things would only set him back and impede progress. It would make the second instance, as the first thing he had realized upon finding himself here was that no darkness portal led outside the boundaries of the city. He'd have to do more research before he managed to uncover a route of return-- devise a hypothesis that would soon start him on his newest experiment: the creation of an exit.
