What in the name of all things holy...

Dan here.

Pop music has gone too far.

So I was sitting on the futon, closing some links to work on a piece of chainmail, and I had MTV2 on in the background. Noise so I'm not just doing the tedious job of making armor. What comes on but Kelly Rowland (of Destiny's Child fame, now apparently solo) and her new song "Stole."

At first, I sat and listened. Gave it a chance, because you never know: Sometimes when someone breaks out of an ensemble where they WEREN'T the star, they're actually better than the original group. So I'm listening, and it sets some geeky kid not unlike myself as the protagonist. He studies 'Science and smart stuff.' Should've gotten the clue there, but I didn't think of it. So Geek heads to school, and either shoots up the school or shoots himself. I'm not really clear on that point.

That's the first problem. I don't know who the hell this kid shot. By the looks of the reaction of "Mary" (to whom the chorus is attributed), he's dead in the bathroom. But maybe not. I just know he shot somebody. The song goes on to list what Mary might have become (a movie star, of course. Because that's realistic), but now we'll never know, because her life was stole. By what? Again, not sure. She might have been killed, or else the grief of losing a classmate she never knew she had is too much for her. Hell, I don't know.

Then there's another similar scenario. Some dude might have been a basketball star (more realism!), but nope. His life was stole, too. Note the error there. His life wasn't stolen (which would be grammatically correct); oh, no. It was stole. Because otherwise it wouldn't rhyme. Yay for the language taking a backseat to just about everything else. I just can't stand this kind of music. The kind that brings up an issue that has NO RELEVANCE to what's going on today (the school-shooting bandwagon has come and gone, Ms. Rowland. The current trendy tragedy is 9/11. I'll get you a new copy of that memo), and then takes an ignorant stance because it's popular. Wheefun.

I'm not saying someone who shoots schoolmates/himself should be glorified. But Jesus Christ, can't you come up with some other reason that he might have done it besides "The poor kid wasn't popular!" Anti-socialism is one thing, but it should not be equated with suicidal/homicidal urges. I'm anti-social. I'm not about to shoot anyone. We all know the Columbine kids were extreme examples: their case shouldn't be the standard. But apparently, someone told Kelly Rowland that tragedies were hip, and that she should write a song. I hate pop music.
