Cake was a lot of fun … they played a bunch of songs we knew and especially liked, and a couple of new ones off Pressure Chief, which I subsequently picked up at a used book/DVD/CD store in Atlanta. They (or maybe mostly John McCrea, I don’t know) are apparently a fairly green band … they give away a tree at each concert for the winner to plant and sent photos to their website (which they publish) and have said they’re going to record their next album/CD entirely with solar energy.
I found a couple of quotes I really liked in interviews with John McCrea in The Onion and the SF Bay Guardian: “I want music to be free, but I also would love sandwiches to be free, and rent to be free.” And “In a way the fetish of music has been shifted from music itself or musicians to the music player - the shiny iPod that is the most treasured.”
Their website at
www.cakemusic.com is worth checking out.
While we were on the road recently we went to the Georgia Aquarium, which was very cool. I didn’t get to see the cow rays schooling this time, which was a little disappointing-but the moon jellies were way cool, I was able to see the seahorses this time (and the dad was pregnant!), and there was a weird crab-like thing in the cold water exhibit that was extremely alien-looking.
And on Friday the nieceling and I are going to High School Musical: the stage play, which should be fun. The timing worked out well … I will get to enjoy the play and my weekend before going in on Tuesday to have the braces tightened.
