Those who can access UK telly might choose to watch this which starts tonight. You might remember Sevigny from her role as a ciswoman in Boys Don't Cry, a film about a real transman.
I'm not particularly familiar with the term, so I'm not sure myself - but a quick check suggests it's used for female-to-male individuals.
The Guardian article is a little ambiguous as well - but from the trailers (Kid says 'So, you were a man, and now you're a woman?'), and what the article infers, I believe the character Mia is pre-op male-to-female, rather than vice versa - she presents & identifies as female, but hasn't had the gender reassignment surgery (I'd finish that sentence with 'yet', but some people never do, whether due to financial limitations, lack of medical support, or other reasons of their own)
I found the article confusing, too. Will find out more when I watch the programme. If as you infer, the character is MtF, then yes the correct term will be 'transwoman'.
ps the film Boys Don't Cry is about a transman, Brandon Teena. He was a real person. He never had gender reassignment surgery but perhaps would have done so if he hadn't been murdered by transphobic people he'd been spending time with.
Heads-up - in general people seem to prefer "trans man" and "trans woman", rather than smooshing the two together - the reason being that "trans" is an adjective, and (binary) trans people really are men and women, with "trans" as a modifier rather than creating a whole separate category.
I've thought about this for a few days and I respect your opinion but I don't think I'll change the way I write, not now anyway. I've known many transpeople over the years and you're the first person to issue me with a formal 'heads-up' about spelling. Me, I'm a cisgendered dyke and it makes me laugh to call myself a queercrip.

Evidently you read the article more thorougly than I did! Yes, the actor's prosthetic penis does imply that the character is MtF. FtM people I've met or e-met have been unanimous about not requesting penis-construction surgery because that kind of surgery isn't yet very good.

But to tell the truth, I only speed-read that blog thread because it seems to me that it's infighting. Imo infighting is a trap which can too easily distract from important things.
I'm glad you voiced your opinion on that matter, I do get tired of seeing sympathetic and interested people spoken to in a condescending or confrontational manner; it speaks poorly toward compassion and education for the community. Thanks for the link!
