When I set up this LJ comm about 'portrayals of disability' I was thinking of films, books and so on. Those topics are interesting to discuss but it's become clear that how we 'portray' ourselves is interesting too.
Those who are on my Flist know that I've recently been giving myself permission to buy equipment that my disability has started to make relevant, and to claim tax exemption on that purchase. I've also been giving myself permission to say that my MS has gone into relapse. So much about this particular disability is just like things that everybody gets, or at least, it sounds just like that. And the nature of it is that it's unpredictable - a real muddle. It was such a relief when a neurologist put a name to what I was describing.
