Last week was the first time I had used my wheelchair at work. I am finding getting in and out of the building a bit of a challenge but with practice that should get better. I just hope the lift doesn't break down again!
The office I share with colleagues is a bit small for wheeling into so I am leaving it outside the door and walking the last few metres. We may have to rearrange the office at a later date.
I taught from my chair for the first time (biomedical science practical skill at undergraduate level) to students that I have taught a few times over the last year and a term. It went really well. I had to get out of my chair for a few moments at a time to help with some things at the bench, but on the whole I stayed seated. The students are used to seeing me walk with a rollator so are aware I have a mobility problem and many have asked me what my particular problem is, I think they are interested from a scientific point of view mainly! Initially I felt a bit self-conscious and was expecting a barrage of questions from the students, that soon wore off though, they just took it in their stride (so to speak). I did get an email from a student I have had a couple of in depth chats with did email me after class to ask if I was OK and if there was anything she could help me with. That made me smile.
Tell you what does piss me off though - colleagues who never seem to tire of calling me 'hop-along' etc, last week I was asked if I was feeling "a bit lazy".......I accidentally ran over his toes
