In the UK soap opera I watch, Emmerdale, a story is going on about a brain tumour. As so often, they're not telling us what will happen, and I usually prefer not to know in advance. If you don't want to know what happened a few weeks ago,
don't click this link. I've no personal experience, unlike the actor whose character (Brenda) has the tumour. But I do know how it feels when you get a serious, disabling condition, and the vultures start to circle. Brenda is afraid to have the life-saving operation her doctor recommends, so instead she's exploring 'alternative' therapies. Somebody she barely knows has started selling her fruit smoothies to 'shrink' the tumour. As if!
There are always a few people who think they know better than the doctor, aren't there? What suggestions have you been offered? I've written before about what's been offered to me so that I can 'beat' my multiple sclerosis. It was seductive for a while, then the MS grew teeth, and I learned a little humility. Now I take the drug my doctor recommends.
In the soap, I like the way we're seeing everybody close to Brenda putting pressure on her to have the op. Her response is that it's her life and she'll make the most of whatever time she has left. She's not just Gennie's mum, Molly's nana, Bob's girlfriend. She's Brenda. We've seen Gennie apologise for 'not listening' and, this being Soapland, that may be how the story goes. I hope it doesn't go that way. I hope Brenda changes her mind in some suitably dramatic way.
