This week has been a pleasing contrast to last week, which was a bit dire, especially the total horror of Wednesday wherein I missed ALL my uni stuff due to administrative cock-ups, AND went home only to find I'd forgotten to take keys. It was a pretty crap day, but my mother, who is lovely, finished work early and met me at the station and took me back to hers for dinner, so I could collect the keys left at her house. She was really great about stuff, and she also gave me the most AMAZING gift: at her house, she keeps some of the things my father collected from his father's home during probate (he was the will's executor) and brought back, but he seemed so uninterested in most of them that she's tried to unbox them and put them to use. One thing she hung up was a collection of 4 black laquered Chinese plaques, inlaid with mother-of-pearl (
this kind of thing, if you're curious). Now, I've always loved them, and when I told her how nice they looked, she remarked that she didn't like them much because they were "too dark" and I could have them if I wanted! I was quite bowled over with excitement and, well, "too dark" is not really a problem for me, amirite? My mum carefully drove me &
alextiefling home in The Little Tank (I'm starting to feel decidedly guilty about how much I enjoy riding in that Landrover) and now I need to decide where to hang my beautiful art! I don't know if the set's actually valuable, but it's certainly special and I think it's awesome.
This was definitely the start of a turn-around, although my day's leave on Friday to meet with the electrician wasn't quite as functional as I'd have liked, and I was still under the weather enough to miss both
lesyeuxouverts's birthday celebrations and Optimo, which is booooooooo. But this meant I had enough energy to go to
mirabehn &
mirrorshard's Henry IV readthrough, which was (as already described) a wonderful day. I was also given pretty jewellery, which rocks, and because the event was the same time as TDOR events in London, we had a minute's silence before activities, which was a good thing as I didn't feel I'd completely failed to acknowledge it, again. It was really wonderful to see so many lovely people after having been isolated for so long due to the wretched ill.
On Sunday, I did some very needed work, but we also had a lovely guest in the form of
blazingrowan, so we talked about sexuality and Lush products and diversity of tactics in activism and it was all good. My mum also brought us shopping in the Tank! And told me I didn't owe her anything cos it was on my dad ;-) She seems to enjoy meeting our friends and generally, I think reassuring herself that my life is going alright, because, of course, she is a mother so she worries. But not too much, I hope. Also, she liked getting an opportunity to practice her Russian phrases!
Work has been fairly OK this week, quite tiring but I've felt positive about the possibility of catching up if I can keep up the momentum. I had a meeting with the Occupational Health doctor on Monday and she was really nice, very helpful. At home, I've had lots of lovely baths (and suspiciously minimal contact from the electrician) and spent Tuesday evening introducing
alextiefling to the cinematic importance of Buster Keaton. Also! We now have both 'Sons of Anarchy" and (I think a couple of readers may appreciate this) the 2-part Eisenstein collection!! I can't wait to watch 'Alexander Nevsky', but I think we should probably watch them in order. Is anyone else interested in perhaps joining us for such an event, maybe?
On Wednesday, I actually managed to avoid enough on the road-befuddling protests to make it to my lecture! Hurrah! An interesting coincidence that it was about collaborative planning practice and its limitations, v pertinent. I also picked up a bunch of the Lush stuff which had long been on my list (expect more reviews soon!) and the staff were sufficiently sweet to give me one of the gift bags they had in for Saturday (so if you're in the Victoria station area on Saturday...) and it was really pretty good! A trial-sized tin of
Celestial moisturiser, a
Li'l Lush Pudding, a piece of
Mandarin's Tea Party soap and a 100g bottle of
The Olive Branch shower gel. I was impressed. FREE STUFF!! We also had a house guest in the form of a
bunnypip, so we made pizza dough in the breadmaker. Yay home-made pizza!
Today has been pretty excellent. I mean, it started with breakfast sweet pizza (omnomnom cinnamon pizza, need more). That's an excellent start to any day. And then I got my laptop back from Apple, a level of customer service I'm still bloody impressed by. AND they have FINALLY started selling earphones with a remote on the wire!! I've only been waiting 2.5 years or so. There was long-overdue lunch with the lovely
azikale, and I was productive, and I got to leave early, and
alextiefling made vegan fajitas for dinner! There was 'Futurama' and 'Carcassonne' and The Associates and Klaus Nomi and thyme-flavoured chocolate. I also found this delightful video from Eurovision 2001, of Marc Almond and German pop band Rozenstolz covering Nomi's classic "Total Eclipse" (original version
here; the video's so amazingly theatrical. When the hell is someone going to release the other series of 'The Venture Brothers' in Region 2?? I *need* to see the episode with Bowie, Nomi and Iggy Pop at the Guild of Calamitous Intent! Fuck you, Adult Swim, and your US-centrism! Anyway:

Remember, Marc Almond is performing
at the O2 Shepherd's Bush on 2nd December, with Little Annie & Baby Dee supporting! Anyone else going?
Tomorrow,
tajasel has promised drinks at Calloo Callay. Maybe we'll have bar snacks at Saf! I have good feelings generally. This is cheering. Good times.
