Title: Losing

Matt took it hard. As the voices roaring from the guest bleachers seemed to fill the field, he could not have felt more isolated. The crowd filtered out behind him as he stood in the end zone, just staring at the ground. He could feel the town’s disappointment; not because of what they were saying, but because of how little was being said.
It was his fault. He froze on that last play, letting himself get hit mid-play, fumbling the ball. He couldn’t handle the pressure, especially with just recently getting back his starting position.
Soon enough, the stadium was nearly empty. Just a few of his teammates stuck around, quietly waiting as Matt took his time resolving himself. They didn’t know what to say to him, but they surely didn’t blame it all on Matt. There were a lot of mistakes made, and they all just expected him to clean it up in the last quarter. As their fearless leader took his spot back on first string, they expected more.
Matt just stood there, not knowing how to face everyone. Losses and screw-ups have happened before, but this one was harder to deal with. This game was going to validate Matt. It was going to prove that he deserved that spot, not just his placement there because some freshman couldn’t be a “team player”.
He couldn’t even prove that to himself, and he felt so, so alone.
